Hvalfjörður
Monday August 18th - Tuesday 19th 2003 (HMG) - [Put online September 10th 2003]
The Monday after Finnur's dad's 60th birthday-bash was a rainy one. Since Finnur's summer vacation had finally started (after he spent the first week in Iceland working remotely for his company), his first order of business was to find a place to download tons of software so he could start fixing the 10 or so computers that awaited him. We heard that the " National Book Stack" ( Þjóðarbókhlaðan, aka the National & University Library of Iceland) allows people to plug in their laptops to go online - so off we went.
Finnur outside the Library. It turned out that they allow people with wireless cards to go
online for free - which would have been great if Finnur's wireless card had been installed
on his new laptop! Instead, we went to my mother's place (she has DSL!), where Finnur
spent a couple of hours trying to find a driver for the wireless card, but ultimately failing.
When he then discovered that the DSL company only charges for foreign downloads,
he swiftly logged on to tucows.isholf.is, that hosts common programs on a mirror in Iceland...
and got most of the stuff he needed! :)
To finish the day with splendor, we drove out of the capital around 5pm, to spend
the night at a summer house owned by Halli's parents. The summer house is
in Hvalfjörður (Fjord of Whales) and only a 50 minute drive from the capital.
Halli and Adda welcomed us without having to get out into the rain! :)
Catching up.
Soon after we arrived, Óli and Holla also arrived, fresh from a workday
in the "city". It so happened that it was Óli's birthday!! :)
Here he uses his right hand to model his gift with wrapping paper
And here he's using his left hand to model the gift
without wrapping paper! :) Happy birthday Óli! :)
Finnur, Adda and Óli. This was actully my third attempt at taking this picture,
since Finnur's developed the infamous "sleepy-eyes-syndrome", i.e. "flash-eyes".
I must take more pictures of him to de-sensetize him!
Halli and Holla looking at maps of Iceland on the laptop.
A laptop convention. I guess that's what you get when you invite nothing
but a bunch of engineers and a computer scientist into the same house! :)
The view off the "sun-deck" towards the bottom of the fjord.
Halli was the BBQ-meister as usual. This is looking out towards the ocean.
The weather was rainy but incredibly mild, the usual 13°C (55°F) and no wind.
Adda getting everything ready for dinner.
And the infamous group-shot! Holla, Adda, Hrefna, Halli and Óli - or H.A.H.H.Ó.! :)
Hrefna examines Halli a tad too closely at 9:18pm.
Holla munches on some lettuce.
After a lovely hamburger and hot-dog dinner - people passed out on the sofa.
Except Óli, he passed out on a chair! :)
Time to take self-portraits! I still haven't quite mastered Óli's skill at taking
pictures without my arm extending quite so visibly towards the camera...
Later that night, we played some Settlers and Rummikub and went to bed waaaay late...
The morning after was a sunny-ish one. Holla and Óli had woken up really
early (around 8) and actually went straight to work! The rest of us (Halli and Adda
were on vacation) slept in a little and lounged around, chatting and reading magazines.
The green-ness of Icelandic grass has been known to cause camera-people
trouble. It can just be too green! This is again towards the bottom of the fjord.
The sky was mysteriously bright - but still cloudy. And here you have a perfect
demonstration of little trees trying to grow up to be slightly bigger trees...
The summer house in all it's glory! :)
Around 2pm it was time for us to say goodbye since we had to return the car
to Finnur's 90 year old grandfather...
Driving to Reykjavík. This mountain is called Þyrill, and it towers over what
used to be a oil-storage base for the US during WW2, and from the looks of the fence
we passed, still is. This also used to be where the whale-boats landed with their catch.
Laxá í Kjós (Salmon-river in Kjós). People pay good money to get to stand
in the middle of this river and catch salmon... We prefer to stand on dry ground! :)
Nothing of importance really happened over the next days. We did, however, see this
cute camper, which was dutifully marked "Built in the United States for export only".
We also bumped into an ATM (hraðbanki) which had a slide-show showing a few
images, including this one, with the heading "Input you card to be served"...
Imagine seeing that in the US... ;)
