[Written 13 November 2013. There are always a post or two from trips that are so big that I refrain from writing them. This is one of them.]
Anna injured her heel in the beginning of October, and the big carrot I dangled in front of her to keep her off her feet so she’d get better, was promising her a trip to the zoo (which she’d need to be able to walk around).
So, around 10 am on a Wednesday morning, two hours after Finnur had already left for work, dad drove the rest of us to the train station in two trips, to board a train to London. (60 images total.)

Finnur didn’t actually take any time off for our little trip. Instead, he boarded a train every workday morning, rode an hour to London, and worked out of one of the Google offices in London.
Meanwhile, the rest of us did various things, such as visiting the local ice skating rink (9 images total, only 2 from ice rink).

We were both lucky and unlucky with the weather while in England. On one hand it was really warm, but on the other it was quite wet. So we stayed indoors quite a bit, but that was nice too. Because relaxing is nice. 🙂
We did go outside a bit though, mostly to the nearby park. (4 images total)
[Written 13 November 2013] A few weeks back I noticed that the kids would have a ‘winter break’. Sure it was only Monday and Tuesday off, but it sparked an idea… which grew, and ended up in us buying tickets to visit dad in England for 10 days. Dad met us at the airport withRead more
I took Emma to the health clinic for yet another well baby check-up and one immunization shot. She showed off her military style forward crawl, but refused to go up on her knees and do that rocking thing.
As usual the nurse proclaimed her in excellent shape and we’re to return in 2 months. For that visit Emma’s supposed to have mastered clapping, waving, and the pincer grasp.

There was some sort of origami dog team competition in Anna’s class. It had something to do with making lots of dogs out of two sheets of paper to get points, but you had to make many sizes of dogs because each size prompted a new point-level.
The rules were pretty confusing, but Anna attacked the problem with gusto and I was really tired, so I didn’t dig too deep. (3 images total)
Anna started complaining of an achy heel a few weeks ago, and it only got progressively worse as time went on. Since it just didn’t seem like it was getting better, and she’d starting limping around, I took her to the health clinic on 1 October, where she was diagnosed with “Sever’s Disease“.
Basically (if the diagnosis is correct), there’s a growth-line in her heel bone which is inflamed (and so are bits of the Achilles tendon). This is apparently pretty common in kids that are growing fast (going through puberty) and practice sports with a lot of jumping and running (such as team handball). It’s supposed to completely go away on its own as the growth line settles down, but until then she was told to take it easy for 2 weeks in the hopes that it would get better.
So we tried that. Having Anna take it easy. And it. Just. Didn’t. Work.
She’d literally come home from school every day (or every other day if we were lucky), and tell us just how she’d somehow managed to re-strain her heel. It was an impressive list of mangling techniques.
In order to save her from herself, we therefore decided to elope to the countryside for the weekend, armed with a ton of Donald Duck comics from the library. And by golly, it worked! She got through the weekend without re-injuring herself, and we got a nice weekend at Laugarvatn for our troubles. (16 images total)
The snow left almost as quickly as it came. Only a few remnants remained a little longer than others.Read more
