Ginger-snaps
December 23rd 2001 (HMG) - [Put online December 26th 2001]
On December 23rd it is customary to distribute Christmas presents to those who will be absent on Christmas Eve (when we Icelanders open our presents). After having having dropped off some parcels at various locations, we went and visited my uncle Arnar, his wife Magnea and their 6 month old son, Eyþór. He was such a cutie that we had to take pictures...
Hrefna with Eyþór, he's such a cutie-pie!
We then made our way to Holla and Óli, where Halli and Adda were also (as is customary).
There we ate a delicious pasta-salad to start the Christmas-fest with something "light" for the stomach.
Halli and Adda with a bottle of Coke and a pasta-salad between them.
The mood was festive, candles lit and a gingery smell in the air...
... which was no wonder since right after dinner we started making "ginger-snaps"
or "peppercakes" as they are known in Icelandic (piparkökur)
Before we knew it we had a sizeable mountain of ginger-snaps
that needed decorating...
... so I whipped out Holla's whipping machine and made some icing!
My butt got some "icing" too...!! ;)
Let the decorating begin!!
The other side of the table... Hrefna, Óli and Holla.
Notice the industrial-strength syringe I'm holding....scary!!
Finnur, meanwhile, got started on the Jóla-glögg (Yule-glogg!)
And yes, it contains alcohol.
He also proved handy in the art-department. Look at all the pretty cookies!
Close up on the pretty cookies. Scary old icing-syringe in the cup in the foreground...
Just when we'd finished Kaja dropped by to say hi. Hi Kaja!! :)
Then more people, i.e. Holla's siblings and their spouses, showed up.
The rest of the night was spent doing generally silly things like frown at the camera
... and putting double pig-tails in Adda's hair. Look familiar anybody?... :)
At 3am we finally made our way home to Mosfellsbær again,
happy in the knowledge that a few hours later it would be Christmas Eve,
the grand night of eating and packet-opening! :)
