New Year's Eve
Monday December 31st 2001 (HMG) - [Put online January 1st 2002]
Time has passed way too quickly! Where has the time gone?!?! And what is this "time"-thing anyway?!?! :) One thing is for sure... New Year's Eve in Iceland means lots of fireworks!! :)
Finnur made a quick stop at my grandparent's house where he
lit some fireworks. It was drizzling with rain and about 2-4°C that night,
which should explain the shirt.
Here's one of the "cakes" doing a nice imitation of a small volcano.
The kids also got to play. Here we have Pétur lighting some
crackers with all of us standing around him.
Pétur, Bjarni, Hrefna, Nökkvi, Arnar and Eyþór in the rather smoke-filled
greenhouse at Beykihlíð. The wind was not very cooperative and blew all the
smoke right inside!
I then dropped Finnur off at his own family-gathering in Garðabær (another town outside Reykjavík)
and said hello to everybody there, before returning to Beykihlíð.
My mother (on the left) talking with her brother Guðmundur and his wife
Líney in the greenhouse.
At 10:30 pm it was time for the yearly "Áramótaskaup" or "Year-Meeting Comedy Show"
where the funny people of Iceland make fun of what happened in our little country in the year
that is passing. This year the show was unusually good - but I hear last years was terribly bad.
Every single living person in Iceland seems to watch this show since hardly a firework goes off
in the hour that it lasts... but as soon as it finishes at 11:25pm everybody rushes outside to go BOOM!
My family usually goes up onto a nearby hill and just enjoys the show everybody else
is putting on for midnight, and this year was no exception. But we do have our little fireworks
that we light and here I'm holding a little "star light".
A firework going off with the city in the background.
Looking from Öskjuhlíð over Kópavogur (the town next to Reykjavík).
Unfortunately I didn't have a tripod - we'll fix that next year!
As midnight grew closer, people brought out the big guns and the big cakes!
This is only a small portion of the crowd that was up there and the mass of fireworks!
At midnight the shooting reached its peak and we all wished each other a happy new year.
Soon after that we headed down the hill to shoot up the remainder of our own fireworks...
The "little box" on top of the other box shooting into the night.
The other two big boxes contained fireworks at some point. Oh boy!
The last remnants, burnt out by Pétur and Bjarni.
After having eaten lots of cake and helped granny clean up the kitchen, I headed out to meet up with
Finnur at Halli and Adda's place, where Holla and Óli were also.
Me with Adda and Holla in our festive hair-dos! :)
Halli and Finnur enjoying the new year!
Óli tried some new poses while shooting pictures.
But most of all we played "Settlers" - a highly addictive game!
Finnur also tried out a new hairstyle... :)
We finally finished playing at around 8am in the morning, at which point we
collapsed into bed (air mattresses and such) and slept until 2pm...
Holla and Óli fast asleep on January 1st 2002.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!
GLEÐILEGT NÝTT ÁR ÖLL SÖMUL!! :)
