Outdoorsy-Days of June, Gym & Graduation
[Photos taken 16 – 24 June 2023, posted online 15 March 2024. Still in Brussels, still no eruption in Iceland. ]
I guess our lives have settled into a deep groove at this point. With the long, lovely days of June came the usual: e-biking, weeding, summer-housing, gymming, horse-camp, and attending a university graduation party!
Friday 16 June 2023
The e-biking group gathered at 6 pm within easy biking distance from home, and did a 20 km circuit.
Checking out the Heiðmörk sign. I feel like I should go there way more often, just to get to know all the paths.
There was some of this.
Some of this.
On familiar ground, we’d biked there before.
There’s a lovely place to stop and snack.
The insides of forests tend to be weirdly barren.
Poor trees still working hard to recreate the leaves that the salt-storm burned in May.
I was back home by 8 pm!
Still feeling high on energy, I went out to do some gardening/prettification along the walkway behind our house.
On the inside of the fence, the darn bird-feed had contained grassy-seeds… This had been laughing in my face for most of June, so when I stopped by it at 11 in the evening, I decided to just do a tiny bit to get started…
Anna’s nasturtium flower being quite happy!
The view behind the fence. These in-lets were all weeds until covid hit, and I had nothing better to do but tend to the backyard.
I keep meaning to put down more flowers, but I just hasn’t happened.

Anna’s living-room cherry tomatoes were coming along nicely. The plant happily didn’t smell unless you touched it.
More gardening! The weather the past couple of summers has been chapter-like, with either no-rain for weeks or all-the-rain for weeks. We’ve had to be somewhat careful to remember to water the plants!
Heading out of town to visit the summer house. Mount Esja has a new invasive plant species, that light green with a lighter overtone: skógarkerfill , or cow parsley .
The views on the way are often lovely.
Finnur was already there, on a mission to behead all the dandelions before they turned into seed-cluster-bombs.
Bjarki trampolining.
Finnur in his natural state.
It was Iceland’s Independence Day so the kids got candy floss in cans!
Some of the adults braving the blood-thirsty midget flies in the evening.
My bravery was a lot less impressive.
The view at 11 in the evening.
Quick selfie to mark 29 years of begin together!
Sunday 18 June 2023
I missed the men in action, but they managed to cut down half of a “double top” on one of the fir trees. Finnur had already gotten a few of them. They happen when the true top dies.
Loading the old trampoline into a trailer.
So lovely!
Cardboard boxes about to also get the royal trash treatment!
Maybe one day I’ll tear up that walkway and replace it with grass so that it stops mocking me for not weeding it…? But at least we’d managed to mow the lawn.
The kids and I agreed to stop at the Borgarnes cafe before heading home. Routines, routines…
The cafe-dog Álfur came to say hi.
Flag’s from the Independence Day celebrations a day before, on the building opposite the cafe.
The leaf-less trees on the way home. You could see that 3-4 trees into the tree-line the leaves were ok, meaning the trees facing the ocean took the brunt of the salt-storm-hit.

Proof I sweated at the gym!
Tuesday 20 June 2023
Oops, I did it again!
The weather was lovely, so I went out after dinner to continue my battle against the bird-feed-grass.
A flowering tree, and the bird “table” looking a little sad after the winter.
Finnur went around, taking heads off of dandelions.
A bit of progress!
I’d gotten side-tracked by rescuing little baby-trees. I then just left them outside, and now I wonder if these survived the winter?
Remains of dandelions.
The sun still going strong at 22:20.

Third time’s a charm?
Nice view outside the bedroom window at 9 pm.
Thursday 22 June 2023
Testing the free charging facility at parking garage under the Smáralind tower. You need to have an employee card to access that level. I’m pretty sure these were installed by my previous employer, as my current employer is leasing the same floor as the previous one used to occupy. Charging worked!
Friday 23 June 2023
It was again time for Emma’s “end of 2-week-horse-camp” show.
By the fence where the observers were asked to stand.
Here we go, again!
Circling.
Concentrating.
A post-show hug.
Certificate of completion.
A dog checking out saddles.

Graduation party time!
The family, minus one brother. Congratulations!!
