E-biking Around Meðalfell, Hiking Þríhyrningur & Passenger Concert

[Photos taken 08 – 16 June 2022, posted online 22 January 2023. The Big Thaw has turned into The Snowstorm, and there are tumultuous weather-times ahead after six weeks of solid frost, breaking a 100 year old record.]

The second week of June ramped up the activity-pace considerably from the previous week.

First off was a late-afternoon trip e-bike trip around Meðalfell and Meðalfellsvatn, then I began an info-brain-dump of our upcoming and rather complicated US trip, I kept going to the gym, we had friends over for dinner, Finnur took off for London, I hiked up and down Þríhyrningur, Anna returned from Mexico, I went on a dinner-and-concert (Passenger) date with some friends, Emma started horse-camp, we attended a birthday party, haircuts happened, a new nephew was born, and I met up with fellow EEs from undergrad. All in the space of 9 days!?!?!?!? (90-ish images total)

The e-biking group about to bike around that mount, called Meðalfell (Average Mount/Mound), and the accompanying lake. It’s located about 30 minutes out of the capital area.
Stopping for a bit behind the mount(d).
Yes, another pet cemetary!
The road ahead.
The road behind. It’s important to always close gates that you open.
Familiar houses in the distance, owned by some friends of ours.
After biking “behind” the mount, we arrived at the “front” road…
… and took a right turn to close the circle.
Stopping to snack besides the houses owned by the family of the group’s owner.
Growing season!
On the far side of the lake from the mount.
I hiked here with the hiking group earlier in the season (March 2022), when this was a muddy mess.
More houses, this is a popular place to build second homes.
About to ride through the neighborhood, to close the circle.
Route strava recording.

A tired 1 km on the rowing machine.
Bjarki at team-gym practice. Due to the dearth of men at his age doing team-gym, they’d been migrated to a mixed-gender team.
This was also the day where my brain waved a white flag, and demanded to stop having to remember all the details of our upcoming, and quite complicated, trip to the US in August. I sat down and created a slide-deck with all the planning information I had rattling around in my brain. It ended up being 35 slides long, and included stuff like flight-and-seat info, transportation-info, lodging-info, and planned activities.
Nice view at 10 pm.

Friday 10 June 2022

Pretty lupines as I biked to work.
Way too late, and with almost no acclimatization, I re-planted a few of the summer flowers Anna had been growing inside.
Finnur really likes these mayonnaise-concoctions!
The hot tub got a spin.
Meanwhile in Mexico, Anna began her long trip home.
On the plane, phew!
Blue skies at JFK!

Saturday 11 June 2022

Finnur left early that morning for a work-trip to London, and bumped into my uncle and family at the airport!
At 10:30, after driving for about two hours, my hiking group found itself by Þríhyrningur (“Triangle” or “Triple-horns”).
The location of the mountain. Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) are the islands off the south coast.
The route we hiked, we took the top route first all the way to the far right, which was the true peak.
The hike started with a long steep slope upwards, and we took frequent stops to catch our collective breaths. The weather was amazing!
High enough to see the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman-Islands) off in the distance.
Happy-Snack-Time!
Still climbing at noon.
We were surprised to spot a dog up ahead. Turns out an older couple was out on a hike with their two very friendly dogs.
Up, up, up, Westman Islands still there for reference.
Weird rocks.
Finally at 12:30 pm, we made it to the top ridge system. The view was a little scary, but very pretty.
T-shirt weather up high!
Obligatory cairn. There was a steep fall a little ways behind it.
Spectacular view!
We found a sheltered spot and sat down to refuel.
Plants are amazingly stubborn!
Off we went again, hiking along the ridge top.
Little stones on big stones, not my favorite.
About to follow the crowd up to the viewing point.
Yeah, not bad!
We kept going…
Heading towards the actual peak of the mountain.
We shed out backpacks for the little last peak, it was a bit of clambering to get up there. This is looking back from where we came.
By the top-cairn, yay!
The view was marvellous!
Looking towards the entrance to Þórsmörk.
The mount is shaped a bit like a triangular hammock. We started hiking down into the hammock.
Small vote on whether to go up the other side of the hammock (the third peak), or take the easy way out. The group decided the third peak was the way to go.
Going up again. By this point I was plenty tired.
Looking towards the ridge we’d walked along.
At the third peak/horn, and about to go down for real.
Snack time at 3:30 pm.
Going down, down, down. I’m a very slow descender.
Westman Islands still there.
More greenery.
The most dangerous part of any trip is when you start seeing the cars again (they’re down by the river). That’s when the accidents happen.
Hard to believe, but we were up there!
Final huddle, and thanks for a most excellent day.
Goodbye Þríhyrningur!
Getting a little extra juice at Selfoss, while my co-riders were in line for ice-cream.

Sunday 12 June 2022

Look who I found at 7 am in front of Keflavik airport!
Still alive!
The other two.
I finally got my act together and oiled some wood.
Early dinner with friends before a concert!
Next stop: Harpa and Passenger!
Enjoying life before the show.
Eldborg is such a successfully designed hall.
Icelandic opening act, Árný Margrét. She was lovely and very Spotify-ish.
Intermission. The daylight messes with you, this is close to 9 pm.
Passenger did a great job, clearly a professional!

Monday 13 June 2022

Emma started at half-day horse camp, she did not want me to take any photos!
The town mowed the grass next to the loaner car we had since our e-Golf was STILL in the shop since November the year before. I decided it would be prudent to get the car washed before the grass permanently glued it self to the car.
My fitness according to Strava. You can see the Covid-jogging madness tapering off.

Wednesday 15 June 2022

Birthday party food! Yay for the resumption of parties!
Teenager suffering through the happy birthday song.
The end of another gorgeous day.

Thursday 16 June 2022

Emma getting a haircut.
All done, and getting so big!
That evening I visited my brand-new nephew! Such a cutie!!
Also enjoyed meeting up with fellow EEs from way back when in undergrad. It was a little chilly to hang out outside by the BBQ but not impossible.
