Google Street View<\/a> has finally made it to Iceland<\/a>, which may or may not have inspired me to take photos of the landscape as we drove (yet again) the hour-long drive to Laugarvatn for a four-night stay at the summer house. \u00a0Most of these were taken out the window, and thus needed color correction, which I attempted.<\/p>\n

The route to Laugarvatn.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Leaving<\/a>

Leaving the capital area, saying goodbye to Mount Esja<\/a> (this is just a tiny bit of it, it’s massive).<\/p><\/div>\n

More Mt. Esja, seen from Mosfellsb\u00e6r. \u00a0We’re about to turn to the right and drive inland.<\/p><\/div>\n

Driving along the valley. This portion of it has a 70 km\/hr speed limit. It goes up to 90 km\/hr once one clears civilization.<\/p><\/div>\n

There are lots of tiny little churches all over Iceland. This one (far left) has a fancy slanted design.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"I'm<\/a>

I’m pretty sure those lightly colored peaks in the background are called Botnss\u00falur<\/a> (Bottom Pillars).<\/p><\/div>\n

\"The<\/a>

The last house before the speed limit goes up. It’s called Glj\u00fafrasteinn<\/a> and is famous for being the former home of Iceland’s only Nobel prize winner, Halld\u00f3r Laxness<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n

Heading up onto the highish flatland.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Grass<\/a>

Grass and distant peaks.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Icelanders<\/a>

Icelanders have big cars.<\/p><\/div>\n

Grazing sheep.<\/p><\/div>\n

See the sheep?<\/p><\/div>\n

\"I<\/a>

I always marvel at the guts of bikers biking in Iceland. \u00a0There is no hard shoulder to speak of.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\u00deingvellir<\/a>

\u00deingvellir Lake<\/a> visible from a distance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Apparently<\/a>

Apparently tourists stop there and make little stone mounds. I don’t know why.<\/p><\/div>\n

More lake visible. There are summer houses around it. They mostly belong to the ‘fancy’ families of Iceland.<\/p><\/div>\n

Run sheep, run!<\/p><\/div>\n

The road through the national park is wrinkly, and the speed limit is 50 km\/hr.<\/p><\/div>\n

Maybe this year we’ll make it there when the autumn colors show up. \u00a0The dark line is the crack corresponding to the other crack. \u00a0The whole area is sinking, hence the lake.<\/p><\/div>\n

Kids in a car. \u00a0We’ve now settled into a routine where they get cookies every 15-20 minutes if they behave.<\/p><\/div>\n

More flats. More sheep. More peaks in the distance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Erosion<\/a>

Erosion is a pretty big problem in Iceland. Our soils is delicate, and the sheep like to eat the new stuff.<\/p><\/div>\n

Mt. Hekla<\/a> visible in the distance, as well as some modern technology stuff.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"About<\/a>

About to head to lower ground.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Laugarvatn<\/a>

Laugarvatn (Laugar=Pool, Vatn=Water). \u00a0It’s the name of the lake and the town next to the lake.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"The<\/a>

The University of Iceland’s sport division is housed there, as well as some other boarding schools. In the summers they become hotels.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Approaching<\/a>

Approaching the entrance into town. Take a left at the round-about and enter town, take a right and head elsewhere. We take a right.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"The<\/a>

The summer house is not actually in Laugarvatn, it’s a little ways away.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"Mt.<\/a>

Mt. Hekla again. It erupts pretty frequently.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"The<\/a>

The mountain that ‘sits’ over Laugarvatn.<\/p><\/div>\n
