{"id":7404,"date":"2013-02-06T17:19:29","date_gmt":"2013-02-06T17:19:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/?p=7404"},"modified":"2013-02-06T17:19:29","modified_gmt":"2013-02-06T17:19:29","slug":"not-just-in-my-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/2013\/02\/not-just-in-my-head\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Just In My Head"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most\u00a0aggravating\u00a0things about high blood pressure issues is the knowledge that stress makes it worse. \u00a0The result is this vicious cycle where the reading is high, then you start stressing about the pressure, and it gets worse from there.<\/p>\n<p>The way I deal with this is to take multiple measurements over the course of a few minutes, because once you have the first measurement you can start doing relaxation\u00a0exercises, and be pretty sure the numbers aren&#8217;t going to get any worse. \u00a0That gives you a range of numbers, which you can average together for each day.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;ve been tracking my blood pressure at home more or less since November and recording it using <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ptashek.bplog&amp;feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wdGFzaGVrLmJwbG9nIl0.\">this handy blood pressure logging app<\/a>\u00a0(you have to pay a bit for <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ptashek.bpllc&amp;feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wdGFzaGVrLmJwbGxjIl0.\">the fancy ad-free version<\/a>). \u00a0 Perhaps stupidly, I took a lot of December off while I was sick, and I&#8217;ve omitted some of the most crazy extreme of measurements (for example ones taken when I&#8217;ve just sat down after climbing the stairs), but when you chart it out, it does look like there&#8217;s a genuine upwards trend going on (red and green lines):<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7405\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Screenshot_2013-02-06-12-50-18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7405\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7405\" alt=\"AVERAGE blood pressure (number scale on left, red and green lines) and pulse measurements (scale on right, blue line).\" src=\"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Screenshot_2013-02-06-12-50-18.jpg\" width=\"435\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Screenshot_2013-02-06-12-50-18.jpg 435w, https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Screenshot_2013-02-06-12-50-18-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AVERAGE blood pressure (number scale on left, red and green lines) and pulse measurements (scale on right, blue line) per day.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The docs and midwives seem to mostly care about the lower (diastolic, green) number, which should lie in the 90-95 range, with above 105 being &#8216;bad&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Now, December 21 was when the diastolic (lower number) went over 100 for the first time (see chart below). \u00a0January 4 was when I got a teeny tiny bit of blood pressure medication (1 pill per day), and January 7 was when the dosage was upped to 3&#215;1 pills per day. \u00a0As of yesterday (Feb 5) I&#8217;m on 3&#215;2 pills a day.<\/p>\n<p>One can see that things were getting a bit out of hand there at the beginning of January, but that the medication brought the numbers down. \u00a0Even then, there&#8217;s an upwards trend all through January, which makes me think that this isn&#8217;t just something in my head &#8211; this appears to be a &#8216;real&#8217; physical reaction to the pregnancy. \u00a0Perhaps &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/highbloodpressureinpregnancy.html\">pregnancy-induced hypertension<\/a>&#8216;
