[The docs finally decided what to do with me and discharged me today with a 7-day dose of huge antibotics. It is great being home again, and oh so much calmer, well except for Anna who’s kinda jumping off the walls with excitement. I now have a rented pump and Anna watched me use it very carefully. Dinner was a combo-plate of food provided by various friends.<\/p>\n
It was rough going home without Bjarki Freyr, not to mention Reynir Hugi. What made it rougher was that just as we had to leave Bjarki to fetch Anna, his heartrate went through the roof for a few long seconds but he recovered quickly and kept hick-upping through the entire episode. Later tonight we got a call from the NICU that started with “your baby is fine” but my mind immediately went “yes, but….?”.<\/p>\n
So they did a cardiogram and found he has some erroneous electric signals that cause tachycardia. So they’ll give him some medicine for that, and we were told to expect that he’ll continue on these drugs after he gets discharged. He might then need an operation when he reaches school-age, but that’s way way way in the future.<\/p>\n
And thus I now feel like we’ve officially begun the NICU-rollercoaster-ride. This is the first piece of “bad” news we get, after a string of what has so far been rather positive feedback. We’ve been told to expect that he’ll switch between the nose-air and ventilator 6-7 times, and that they’ll be stopping and starting his feeding (it got stopped today). We should also not be surprised if he gets an infection, this is after all a hospital and there are a lot of bugs floating around. All I know is that I could never work in the NICU, I just don’t have the nerves needed. Sigh.<\/p>\n
