[Bjarki Freyr is one week old today, or 27 week old, depending on how you look at it. They took pictures of his heart and his brain this morning and the hole in his heart has closed (wee!) and there is no evidence of any bleeding on the brain (weee!). If anyone is wondering about the hole in his heart: all children have this hole early on in the womb, but it apparently closes automatically shortly after full term birth. <\/p>\n
Bjarki is anemic, however, because the doctors keep drawing a little blood to check the condition. Premies don’t make their own blood, at least not initially, so Bjarki got his first transfusion today and more will likely follow. He also pooped for the first time last night, and since the hole in his heart has closed they decided to give him milk again – 3 ml every 6 hours to start with. <\/p>\n
This was a rather busy day though. We went to the hospital around noon and met the developmental expert who spoke about what to expect with Bjarki. Finnur then went to sign the birth certificates so now Bjarki Freyr and Reynir Hugi formally have names. We sat with Bjarki for a good while but then went home and picked up grandma Anna and went shopping. I tried to buy a fashionable-breastfeeding-bra, but found out the store doesn’t carry them big enough! I’ll try another store tomorrow.<\/p>\n
I have not mentioned it so far, but the milk production is in full swing and actually so hyperactive that the storage we have allocated at the hospital is about to fill up! It looks like we might have to buy our own freezer or possibly donate the milk. Maybe this is just the beginning-madness, so maybe it will calm down a bit.<\/i>]<\/p>\n
