[Great relief! Bjarki is finally home from the hospital after 3 months and 3 days. We got the news early morning that he was in fact being graduated today so we showed up at 10am. They had warned us a week ago that he might be coming home today, but I was taking that with a grain of salt since they were off the mark on when he’d go down to the IICU from the NICU. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

The graduation took a while longer than I expected; we had to fill out forms, listen to practical advice from the nurses, talk to the developmental psychologist, wait for the oxygen tank, the dean had to make a speech and hand Bjarki his diploma, etc. etc. \ud83d\ude42 When it became clear to me this would take most of the day I had Hrefna drop me off at work so I could try to finish my work project I am trying to deliver before going on paternal leave for three weeks. Hrefna stayed at the hospital until 3pm and then took him home in the going-home-from-the-hospital outfit that great grandma Hrefna lent us (the eighteenth child in a row to wear those two dresses – one for each sex). After work I fetched Anna and when I got home Sarah and Augusto were busy-bees in our kitchen making pizza, while the rest of us were adoring the little prince.<\/p>\n

The boy was sent home with an almost-man-sized oxygen tank (see below) and seven little “travel”-oxygen tanks, which are about half the size of a scuba tank. We don’t know how long he has to stay on the oxygen; the nurses said he might be on it for almost a year, but we’ll see how it goes. It is kind of weird to look at the big oxygen tank, which is located in the corner of our stairway, but as my colleague Erik phrased it when his little girl brought home a similar tank: “Nothing says baby room like a world-war 2 era large standing oxygen tank does it?<\/a>“. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

It so happens that Erik is in the same group I am at Google; his girl ended up on the same NICU and same IICU at a similar time Bjarki was there and went home at a similar time also. Quite a coincidence.<\/i>]<\/p>\n
