{"id":4172,"date":"2011-08-31T23:23:28","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T23:23:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/?p=4172"},"modified":"2011-08-31T23:23:28","modified_gmt":"2011-08-31T23:23:28","slug":"on-biking-to-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/on-biking-to-work\/","title":{"rendered":"On Biking to Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although living right next to work (2 minutes walking!) was really really convenient, I came to the conclusion that there is such a thing as living <em>too<\/em> close to work. \u00a0For one thing, every time we&#8217;d drive home in the evening, we&#8217;d pass my building, and there would be lots of cars outside as the students sweated away at various projects. \u00a0That always brought back memories and kicked me out of &#8216;The Now&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing is that I&#8217;ve discovered that I&#8217;m utterly useless at going out for a random run, or a random bike-ride just for\u00a0exercise. \u00a0I need there to be a purpose to going out on a run or a ride or a walk (and training for a race won&#8217;t cut it). \u00a0There has to be some point in getting from A to B if I&#8217;m going to be doing it on a regular basis. \u00a0And thus we settled on a location that was not next to work, but within a bike-able distance to work.<\/p>\n<p>This here blog post is to mark that I&#8217;ve biked to work for a whole month (with two or three exceptions, due to scheduling issues). \u00a0Thankfully, the weather has cooperated, with a mostly dry month, and not a lot of wind. \u00a0It&#8217;s basically been utterly gorgeous out there every day, and that has indeed made it easier.<\/p>\n<p>Having a fancy phone that can <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?msid=209795704173805723959.0004aa23b0ffedb05d025&amp;msa=0\">track my progress<\/a> via GPS, while playing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiolab.org\/series\/podcasts\/\">fantastic NPR podcasts<\/a> has also been a real boost. \u00a0Getting fenders, waterproof biking-gloves, and a proper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ortlieb.co.uk\/index.php\/bike\/rear-panniers\/downtown-ql2.html\">bike-bag<\/a>\u00a0has also helped now that it&#8217;s started raining a bit. \u00a0Yet to come are studded tires, lights, and more protective gear as darkness and colder weather will be coming our way soon.<\/p>\n<p>All in all it takes me a little over 30 minutes to bike to work, but closer to 35-40 minutes to bike back home from work since it&#8217;s more uphill, and the wind tends to be unfavorable. \u00a0If I were driving, it would take 15 minutes in no traffic, and some 20-25 minutes in traffic (I wouldn&#8217;t know, I&#8217;ve never tried). \u00a0As conditions will continue to deteriorate, driving may take longer than biking! \u00a0But we&#8217;ll have to wait and see if I make it to that point&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although living right next to work (2 minutes walking!) was really really convenient, I came to the conclusion that there is such a thing as living too close to work. \u00a0For one thing, every time we&#8217;d drive home in the evening, we&#8217;d pass my building, and there would be lots of cars outside as the<a class=\"button\" href=\"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/2011\/08\/on-biking-to-work\/\" title=\"Read More\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","post-container col-md-12"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4172","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4172"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4172\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4174,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4172\/revisions\/4174"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4172"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4172"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/hrefna.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4172"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
