[Photos taken 16 – 31 August 2021, posted online 23 December 2021. Record number of Covid-19 infections yesterday, restrictions have been moved down to 20 persons per room, 200 max and masked at organized seated events with official negative rapid-test, and 2 m distancing instead of 1 m. Zero snow on the ground, and the officially-no-longer-erupting volcano is shaking again. Never a dull moment!<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With summer vacation from work officially over, life began resuming some sort of a rhythm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spring, Emma had managed to squeeze out of me a week of half-days at a “petting-zoo” in Mosfellsb\u00e6r<\/a> (a 20 minute drive from our house) so this first week back at work involved a lot of driving. Thankfully, Anna now has a driving license, so we split up driving duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With covid-19 levels running rather high, but waning, Finnur and I worked mostly from home. Walks were taken, the garden was harvested, parties were attended (!), we filled house #2 to the rafters with people one night, Bjarki got vaccinated, schools restarted, and I caught some cold or other that was not covid. The never-ending Covid-19 saga, as told through the lens of domestic infections in Iceland<\/a>. With 90% of the eligible population vaccinated<\/a>, authorities didn’t clamp down nearly as hard as they did pre-vaccination. Instead they set their restrictions to aim for an infection rate that the hospital system could cope with without collapsing. That last peak is omicron saying hi.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I tried the Witcher GPS-linked walkabout-phone-game<\/a> for a bit. It provided some entertainment, but once the quests were mostly done, I eventually gave up on its repetitive nature and uninstalled it. This is past 9 pm.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dry weather was predicted, and knowing this was probably my last chance, I ran out and started oiling the outside of the fence. This part generally gets the biggest amount of sun in the summer, and shrivels up relatively quickly.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Emma tried to convince me that this kitten should come and live with us.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Next stop was the hair-salon to ensure Emma could see the white-board when school restarted.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We got a phone call from the library that Emma’s name had been drawn from the pot of registered-readers that summer. She got a book as a price!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

That evening we held a farewell party for an American colleague of mine that had survived living in Iceland for five years, but was now heading back to the land of freedom. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/a>
While at the party, I got an email from Anna’s school-master, notifying us that she’d been in class the day before with someone that had been diagnosed with covid the following day. Using the new rules, Anna was not quarantined, but instead asked to be “infection-aware”, avoid being around sensitive people, and to get tested if anything was out of the ordinary.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Saturday 21 August 2021<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

That weekend we were back at house #2 (which really needs a better name). This time around we filled all the beds, squeezing in my mom and two brothers & family. Brother #3 came by for dinner, and while Anna stayed behind in town.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bjarki arriving at the vaccination hall for his first covid-19 vaccination, the day before school began. This day everyone born 2006 and 2007 were encouraged to come and get vaccinated, with a 10 minute timeslot per birth-month. As before, everything ran like clockwork, and Bjarki did really well.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I went to the gym! Happily, the gyms have not been closed post-vaccinations, but maximum occupancy per room has been changed.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I had the beginnings of a cold (or something) so to the PCR testing site I went. Thankfully the line was short. I was deemed negative.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Every day, Finnur puts the box of salt up on the highest shelf (that gray-ish box), and every day I stand on tippy toes to pull it back down to sprinkle salt on my daily working-from-home fried egg. I’ve decided this is good for my back health! Oh, and I forgot to take a photo of the kids on the first full day of school.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

My non-covid blergh-cold kept coming and going through the week, and I was particularly bummed that evening as I missed my old junior college class that met up for a reunion. How Bjarki managed to completely mangle the rear-tire on his electric scooter, I will never know. But to the repair shop it went, and we ordered a solid-rubber-tire instead.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A reminder for next February to really cut down this kind of shrub in the garden. Too many dead branches for the new ones to overcome.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n
