One September day, in an apparent fit of insanity, I booked a cabin in the north of Iceland, that belongs to the employee association at my work, to stay in over a January weekend.\u00a0 The hope was to go skiing, and visiting our good friends Kata and J\u00f3i, whom we hadn’t seen in very long time.<\/p>\n

As it happens, the weather over the weekend was very poor, and the ski slopes remained closed.\u00a0 We therefore ended up going swimming a couple of times, and generally hanging out with our friends, which was fun.\u00a0 Then our Sunday flight home got cancelled, so we ended up staying an extra day, but nerves got a little thin as the kids were unhappy about the no-ski situation, Bjarki’s shoes got stolen, and it was unclear when our Monday flight home would actually get off the ground.<\/p>\n

I think next time I’ll just wait and see what the weather situation is like… (31 images total)<\/p>\n

Saturday 13 January 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not a shabby view to wake up to. The cabin sits in Kjarnask\u00f3gur<\/a> (Kernel-forest).<\/p><\/div>\n

There was not a lot of snow around, but the surrounding cabins were very close.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Driving to our friends’ house.<\/p><\/div>\n

Not sure about the reason for the frowny face, but we had a rental car at our disposal.<\/p><\/div>\n

Sunday 14 January 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were scheduled to fly back south that evening, so to prepare I sent the crew to J\u00f3i and Kata’s and I packed, and cleaned the house. As I worked it became ever more likely that our flight would get cancelled due to high winds… which in the end it was. Here is the living room. The kitchen is to the left.<\/p><\/div>\n

Looking in the other direction there were three bedrooms, and a bathroom.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Bedroom 1, as I was about to start packing.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Bedroom 2.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Bedroom 3.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

The restroom.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Behind the restroom, there was a shower, and an exit to the hot tub…<\/p><\/div>\n

The hot tub, which turned out to be identical to the one we have at home!<\/p><\/div>\n

As the flight was formally cancelled, we ended up eating dinner at our friends’ place again. Here’s Bjarki doing some homework.<\/p><\/div>\n

Finnur and J\u00f3i had long discussions about where to place recessed lights. Also, Emma’s responsible for the mess on the floor!!<\/p><\/div>\n

Monday 15 January 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Kids horsing around.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

We went swimming, and poor Bjarki ended up leaving in different shoes than he arrived in! Some boy took the wrong shoes, and left his own identical shoes, that were two sizes smaller, and unlabeled. Thankfully, the pool staff found shoes in the lost and found that fit Bjarki ok, but this certainly put a damper on our last day.<\/p><\/div>\n

We visited a coffee house to attempt to smooth out sad emotions, but were only marginally successful.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Putting gas on our rental before driving to the airport.<\/p><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/a>

Our scheduled departure time was 24 hours after when we should have departed, but we did end up having to wait a little extra.\u00a0 Thank goodness for screens!<\/p><\/div>\n
