The incredibly busy weekend (hiking! e-biking! concert!) was followed by a rather busy week, as the hiking and e-biking groups finished their scheduled excursions of the season, back-to-back, of course!

But, I did manage to scrounge together enough brain-cells to give mom flowers on her birthday, and keep showing up to work! (60-ish images total)

After hiking 13 km up and above Glymur waterfall the day before, my brother and I set out bright and early to drive 2.5 hours to Vík í Mýrdal. We parked the car by Hotel Katla, dismounted the e-bikes, and rode inland to two beautiful gullies, Remundargil and Þakgil (“gil” is Icelandic for “gully”).

The weather played along for the most part, just the very last bit had some wind and rain. We neglected to check out the elevation profile though… We thought we were biking upwards to the gullies, and then downwards on the way back. In actuality, we sort of climbed over a “mountain” to get there, and of course, had to climb over it on the way back.

My brother’s bike battery died when about 10% remained of the trip, meaning the bike got super heavy to bike, so he got to test the guide’s tether for the last little bit as we rode against the wind and the rain. My battery ran out as we turned back into the parking lot. Range anxiety on e-bikes is a real thing!

We arrived back in town just in time for me to make it to my long-since-bought-tickets for Emiliana Torrini and the Colorist Orchestra at Harpa Concert Hall. They were so much fun!! (70-ish images total)

Independence Day & Hiking Glymur Waterfall

Independence day was a relatively quiet affair, with Finnur off on a work-trip in London. The day after I hiked 13 km up Glymur, Iceland’s second highest waterfall, to Hvalvatn (Whale-Water), and back again with my hiking group. (60-ish images total)

E-biking Around Meðalfell, Hiking Þríhyrningur & Passenger Concert

[Photos taken 08 – 16 June 2022, posted online 22 January 2023. The Big Thaw has turned into The Snowstorm, and there are tumultuous weather-times ahead after six weeks of solid frost, breaking a 100 year old record.]

The second week of June ramped up the activity-pace considerably from the previous week.

First off was a late-afternoon trip e-bike trip around Meðalfell and Meðalfellsvatn, then I began an info-brain-dump of our upcoming and rather complicated US trip, I kept going to the gym, we had friends over for dinner, Finnur took off for London, I hiked up and down Þríhyrningur, Anna returned from Mexico, I went on a dinner-and-concert (Passenger) date with some friends, Emma started horse-camp, we attended a birthday party, haircuts happened, a new nephew was born, and I met up with fellow EEs from undergrad. All in the space of 9 days!?!?!?!? (90-ish images total)

Graduation Trip, Mr. Weeding & Gorgeous Days

With Anna on a graduation trip in Mexico, the house was a little emptier than usual. The days were filled with weeding (aka Bjarki’s hunt for money), I attended a choral performance, the kids’ school closed for the summer, we visited the house in Skorradal for a long weekend (where an epic mowing job awaited in glorious weather), and I socialized with the people at work. Bjarki discovered (in a moment of maternal weakness) that he could get paid for weeding the back-yard, and all of a sudden my weeding-load went down dramatically. (Emma will have to wait a few years, she’s a bit too young).

Anna’s FG Graduation & e-Biking Njarðvíkurheiði

After three years at FG (Fjölbrautaskólinn í Garðabæ), Anna graduated/matriculated with her “student’s diploma”, allowing her to enter university. She did a really good job, especially in light of the whole covid-situation, and months and month of remote learning and zero socialization.

We attended the graduation ceremony, and then we received family and friends in one of the houses at Árbæjarsafn, aka the “old houses museum. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and almost capped off one of the most insanely busy months in recent memory!

The last ‘event’ of this May-Mayhem was an e-bike ride out on Njarðvíkurheiði, by the international airport. And with that, May finally came to a close! (80-ish images total)

May-Mayhem: Sunny Days, Party-Prep & e-Biking Norðurárdalur

The weather took a turn for the absolutely gorgeous, and I kept not using it to oil all the wood. Other garden work happened, an injured Emma cheered on her team at a gymnastics meet, we attended a graduation party, while preparing for our own graduation party, and I went on a 42 km e-bike ride up by Mount Baula. The week kept up seemingly non-stop May action. I kept biking to work, as the weather kept being awesome. On the Monday I biked 24 km with the e-biking group in my “backyard”, Tuesday saw me couch-shopping, Wednesday was a mountain-hike, Thursday was dinner-and-a-comedy-show, and by Friday I realized I was horribly sleep-deprived. The madness that was May continued with two e-bike rides in one week, two music school recitals, trying to figure out what to do about Emma’s somewhat injured foot, a bike-to-work challenge, rushing to clear the yard of leaves and branches, and Finnur traveling to Scotland to play in a soccer tournament (“old boys” division). May-Mayhem: Gardening, e-Biking, Trevor Noah, Music & Friends!

Well, October was do-all-the-things-at-home while I was between jobs, and my photo-time was spent assembling the annual photo-calendar. I’ve now started my new job at Controlant, and life’s settling into a more regular rhythm. Also, quite frankly, May was insane, and there have been a lot of photos to plough through…!]

May was very, very busy! In this first week we got some gardening done, I joined an e-bike trip around Reykjavik, there was an event at work, two kids saw the dentist, nature got a quick visit, I went to see Trevor Noah, attended an orchestra concert, and then had dinner with friends!

Yes, the rest of May pretty much kept up that pace! Eeek! (40-ish images total)
