Sporty Bjarki
This Saturday morning I decided to bring the ‘big’ camera to Bjarki’s sports/athletics-school, where I took lots of pictures (you have to click on the ‘Read the rest of this entry‘ to see all of them).
First I had to drop Anna off at her English school though, which meant that Bjarki and I were out and about way too early for his session. The only thing to do: stop by the local bakery and buy some bread and a ‘healthy’ (cough, cough) snack to munch on for a bit.
Dog-sitting. Sorta.
Finnur took off today to remind his co-workers in California of his existence. Pretty much exactly when he was about to board the plane to Seattle, I went to fetch Bjarki from daycare. When I arrived, it transpired that it was Bjarki’s turn to ‘dog-sit’ the stuffed dog that lives in his daycare-room, that apparentlyRead more
Quiet Week
This week has crept by pretty quietly. I began Monday by meeting my midwife, who confirmed that my blood-work had come back fine, and that I appeared to have dodged the gestational diabetes bullet yet again. Phew! Anna’s school had a staff-organizational-day that day, so the two of us just hung out at home forRead more
Early Thanksgiving Feast
[Written on Thanksgiving Day, 22 November 2012 – Happy Thanksgiving everybody!! :)]
Nobody can live in the USA for an extended amount of time, and not grow to appreciate, and even love, Thanksgiving! It’s like Christmas, but without the stress of presents! 🙂
For us it was always a great opportunity to hang out with friends, and we’re very fortunate in that we belong to a group of ex-CA-ans who like to get together for the occasion. (This is basically the same group of people we sometimes went camping with in CA…)
Previous ‘Thanksgivings in Iceland’ here: 2010 at Lára’s and 2011 at Soffía’s.
This year, Lára and Halldór kindly offered to host again (not everybody can accommodate such a large group easily – we can really only do it during summer time when we can have people outside), and everybody signed up to bring something for the communal feast.
Snow!! For Realz!!
We got our first proper snowfall yesterday, and it’s finally cold enough outside for the snow to stick around for a bit. 🙂 Not surprisingly, Anna spent all of yesterday out sledding, even though the grass is only just barely covered with snow. Today, the kids went out again, this time with a friend: UPDATE!Read more
Glucose Tolerance Test
[WARNING: This post mentions blood-draws, and lots of them. Don’t read if squeamish!!] This morning I went into the hospital to undergo a ‘blood glucose tolerance test‘, which screens for pregnancy-induced diabetes (meðgöngusykursýki). The test consists of three blood-draws, spaced an hour apart. One shows up at 8 am in the morning having fasted fromRead more
Anna’s Room Updated
We started re-arranging Anna’s room last 23 September, by adding a new desk, and shuffling the other furniture around. Then nothing much happened until a month later, when I was evil, and made Anna help me sort through all her stuff during her two days of winter break from school. The next day I madeRead more
Bjarki’s Toy Labels – The Complete Set
Back in late August I took the first stab at organizing Bjarki’s stuff in his room. One important part of this organizing was to label his toy buckets so that it would be easier to find toys and tidy up. Having all the time in the world, I decided to make my own labels forRead more
Sewing Club for Ex-Californians
Belonging to a ‘sewing club’ (eat good food and chat once per month or so) of Icelandic women in California went a long ways towards saving my sanity at times while at school. I still remember walking into ‘a real home’ for the first time in a month, after only hanging out in student housingRead more
Shuffling Around, Old-Lady Style
This post is just to remind myself NOT to go on multiple-hour-long shopping trips in the next few months. After spending about 4 hours on my feet last Thursday, a rather central part of my body (the front-most part of my pelvis) staged a mutiny, and now I’m walking around slowly like an old ladyRead more
