Open Air Olden Times Museum / Return to Iceland

[Photos taken 16 – 17 August 2025, posted online 25 October 2026. Blue skies and frozen ground, that will probably give way to warmth, rain and wind later this week.]

On our last full day in Denmark, we opted to go visit the “open air museum” (“life in the olden times”) that is a hop and skip away from where our “new Danes” live. We didn’t have space for everybody in the car so Finnur stayed behind, happily resting tired legs after the morning’s football practice!

It was a warm day, and we arrived late, but managed to walk around for a bit. Next time we might arrive a bit earlier to catch a horse-drawn carriage-ride around, to save our feet.

The day ended at a steakhouse-ish restaurant, before going back to our Airbnb house to pack.

The following day we stopped by to hug the young ones goodbye, then flew to Iceland, and went straight to Finnur’s dad’s birthday!

It was very weird coming home without Anna. Thank goodness for modern technology, where people are only a chat window away.

There was an actual functioning water pump at the open air museum! Perhaps a better translation is “old way of living” museum?
For Finnur, the day began bright and early, as he drove off to join a football practice he’d been invited to. Somebody he plays football with in Iceland knew of a team of “old boys” in Lyngby, and hooked Finnur up. He had fun!
Yet another variation on eggs, bun, cheese and cucumber to start the day for me…
Much like in other Scandinavian countries (not Iceland though), most grocery stores in Denmark have machines that accept cans and bottles, and you can then spend the refund in the store.
Ikea, again…
Lunch of champions.
Sweden meets Denmark outside.
Today’s haul was desk chairs, and carpets to try and lessen the wear on the floor.
The fully extended sofa bed in the “living room”.
By the Frilands-museum!
The horse drawing the carriage. We didn’t realize this was the last departure of the day, or we would have joined.
There were ponies that little kids could ride.
Very idyllic.
Blood sugar was in short supply, so we supplemented with ice-cream.
People used to be tiiiiny!
A hen was walking about.
Walking around places like these you realize you take for granted that you know how weaving and yarn-work is done, while the kids have no idea…
These roofs look like a lot of work to make.
Fruits, on trees?! What is this, the tropics?!
Sure enough, an apple.
Herbs being dried.
There was old stuff to handle.
The water-pump was a hit!
Watering the plants…
Very Danish.
Some hard candy to pick the blood sugar up a bit. Spirits were beginning to wilt in the heat.
I have no idea what this was/is.
Schematics of a hospital building.
More arty branches. You could crawl in there.
Bjarki the giant strikes again! To be fair, this was one of the bigger houses.
There were lots of different types of houses from different time periods.
About to escape!
The wilting was so severe that we went straight to the bakery/cafe, and fueled up!
Anna found herself a bike-helmet, although most locals don’t seem to use them.
Eating some watermelon back at home base.
The last restaurant of the trip. We discovered yet again that Danes like to smoke outside restaurants, and if the windows are open, the smell comes right inside. Ugh.
Emma with the hugest glass of soda we’ve ever seen!
Last group photo for a long while!
The fifth or sixth identical pizza this trip…
After dinner, the twosome biked home…
We drove.
That evening I had to fill the rental car up with gas/petrol. The first pump didn’t work, but thankfully the second one did.
The total after the week. Mostly it was short trips, so it wasn’t too bad.
A spider welcomed me back to home-base.

Sunday 17 August 2025

Breakfast being readied.
Bedding stripped as per our hosts request.
Time for one last goodbye…
Huuuugs…
Goodbye… for now!
I managed to return the car… then went to find the others.
The line to security was insane, but I managed to find the others, and join them in line.
Blood-sugar-boost part eleventy-hundred.
Our plane.
Only four of us going on the plane, so weird.
Airborne! We got a nice view over the strange bridge-to-tunnel path between Denmark and Sweden.
Emma enjoying the view.
Coming in for landing in Iceland.
That’s the end of the greenery…
Yup, home again!
The fresh air is always so nice. We routinely meet people in thick jackets as we walk to the car in a t-shirt.
The eruption had completely stopped, but there was still a bit of steam being emitted.
We drove straight to a Finnur’s dad’s birthday celebration!
Ugh, not the kind of thing you want when you return home. Thankfully the shop fixed this fairly quickly. And thus end-eth our summaer vacation, and all of a sudden we were minus one person at home!
