Driver’s License / Folfing / To Germany

[Photos taken 01 – 04 August 2024, posted online 28 October 2024. Rainy days still, with intermittent frosty days here and there.]

The day of Bjarki’s behind-the-wheel driving exam arrived, and he passed! He downloaded his official electronic driver’s license, and went for a drive with his big sister. How they grow!

We went frisbee golfing (folfing) after Anna finished her summer employment, I finally attacked the weeds in the backyard, before we all headed to Munich, Germany for our “formal” summer vacation.

Our first afternoon there was spent searching for an open grocery store, going out for dinner, and walking around the English Garden to where the surfers hang out (Eisbachwelle on the river Isar).

Bjarki taking his big sister out for his first drive as a (provisionally) licensed driver! (She was too young to get to accompany him on his learner’s permit.) In the next two or three years, he needs to not do anything strike-worthy for a whole year and then he’ll get a permanent license.
Earlier that day it had “rained cats and dogs”, kind of like in foreign lands. We don’t often see such heavy rain, but it was quite emblematic of this “summer”.
Bjarki with his official electronic driver’s license (minus all the info!)
After the rain had passed, I loaded my car up for Yet. Another. Trip. to the recycling center.
Such handy boxes!

With all my heel and foot issues in general I’ve started paying more attention to how much shoes shape my toes. Modern shoes have bizarrely tight toe-boxes, and I think my big-toe is now permanently turned a bit inwards at the top, not to mention the curled up little toe.
Playing at the gym, the group classes had gone on a well deserved vacation.
To celebrate Anna’s last day at work, we went out to play folf in a nearby forested area (Guðmundarlundur).
Throwing uphill. The goal is barely visible up between the trees.
Action-shot!
Anna’s the most practiced of all of us. That tree tunnel is tricky for all though, because if you’re super-unlucky, the disc rolls far downhill, orthogonally to where you want it to go.
A bit of swinging before finishing the last three “holes”.

Saturday 03 August 2024

It had finally stopped raining for a bit, so it was the last chance to get any weeding done for a while, as we were departing for Germany in the morning. So I went out with the new rake, and went to town.
Earth visible again. It had been covered with weeds for a bit too long for my liking…
I ended up just making piles of weeds up at the top, sort of out of sight.
I ran out of gas once I got to the last little bit, which has utterly gotten away from me.
I spotted a bee! They live!
Feeling proud of myself for finally getting my butt out (and having a back strong enough to take part).
That poor plant in the center is still having a hard time…

Sunday 04 August 2024

The sky at 4 in the morning, when we awoke to head to the airport.
Bjarki drove us to the airport!
The view at 5 in the morning as the sun came up.
17 minutes later.
Eating breakfast at Jómfrúin is by now almost customary!
The “hip and happening” table at the bookstore. I wound up buying “The Exceptions” on Kindle. I still haven’t finished it, just a little too depressing.
Let the long walk begin!
Lots of early morning departures.
Embarking.
In the air at 7:40 in the morning.
Taking a hard right, overlooking Njarðvík and the Viking World house.
Flying past Seltjörn, where I’ve biked. The 22 August 2024 eruption happened just out of frame, on the left. You can see all the cracks in the ground!
The fresh lava from December 2023 until June 2024, and the deserted town of Grindavík in the distance. The crack in the ground that goes through the “spine” of the field is clearly visible.
The main crater from the 2021 Fagradalsfjall eruption. You can see the newer lava and Grindavík on the top-right.
Sudden change of scenery!
We’d been warned there was staff shortage at the Munich airport, and that our bags would arrive late. It looked like there were two employees, and it took at least 45 minutes to get our bags.
Nothing much happening…
We took the trains towards the apartment we’d be staying in.
The house we were staying in was undergoing renovations, which often meant banging early in the morning, and then quiet.
Siblings by a sample of the insanely complicated parking instructions. Every single road-side-strip had some instructions.
Almost everything is closed in Germany on Sundays, and the only grocery store that I could find that was open was at the central train station, so there we went!
We got our essentials, and made sure all five were present!
I’d found a Sushi/Thai restaurant that was open on Sundays, a couple of blocks from our apartment, so that was our next stop.
Yay for vacation!
To pass time in restaurants, we’d brought the Just One game along.
Good stuff!
Finnur was pleased with what he got.
So was I!
Anna and myself needed to move our bodies, so we went on a walk to the English Garden.
A surrounded busker.
Cozy!
Trees!
Tree by the river that runs through the park, an offshoot of the Isar river.
This tree had had better days.
There were a lot of people out and about on the huge lawn.
People were floating down the river, and looking for stuff in it.
Be mindful of the waterfalls!
Further along we saw some guys jump in the river. What does the sign say?
Don’t die!
Following the river, we came upon the famous surf-boarding-area.
Basically, surfers line up on either side, and then take turns surfing on the permanent standing wave.
From start to collapse.
The flow is quite consistent, and with skill and luck you can play for a while.
Locks and bridges go together.
At some point a strong light was lit for extra visibility.
Animated gif of surfer.
It’s a mesmerizing sight.
Walking past a loud party.
Are you feeling it?
Nice houses along the garden’s edge.
By the Ludwig-Maximilians university fountains, where protestors had set up tents.
