“Welcome home”
That’s what the stewardesses say when you touch down in Iceland. But of course they only say that in Icelandic… Then they go on to saying “Welcome to Iceland” in English before launching into the whole “Please remain seated… yadda yadda…”. The point of the story though is that we made it! We are now in Iceland!! Yippee!! 🙂
The trip was just fine. When we boarded the plane in SFO, I had been awake for 23 hours straight, and I fell asleep so fast that I don’t even remember us taking off!! An hour into the flight they served us breakfast (Honey Nut Cheerios (which made me smile, it’s one of those childhood things), a bagle and a banana) and I slept for the remainder of the flight. In Minneapolis we ate at Chili’s Too with Logi – I got a great cheesesteak and Finnur and Logi both had Bacon Burgers. I was actually surprised because Minneapolis International Airport is SO MUCH NICER than SFO. There are lots of shops, and decent places to eat, so killing off 5 hours was easy! The final leg was the worst for me. I managed to sleep for an hour before dinner came (Oriental Style Chicken, quite good) and then I couldn’t fall asleep for the next four hours. Finnur on the other hand slept like a baby during that time. I finally managed to get a short nap just before we landed, and then we made it through passport control, duty free and customs without much hazzle. Finnur’s parents were waiting for us at the airport and took us home to Mosfellbær, which is (by now) a suburb of Reykjavík. That’s where we’re staying.
We were told that when we landed the warmest place in Europe was Iceland! 🙂 It was 9°C (48°F) and more like spring than the middle of December. Unfortunately, it seems like this heatwave is going to stay for some time so we probably won’t have a white Christmas – but we’ll see!
We were in Mosfellsbær by 8:30am and went straight to bed. We slept until 12:30 – and then somehow managed to get up again… but I’m still terribly tired. Can’t wait for tonight and some more sleep! But hopefully we’ll get into the swing of things quickly.
Today we’re going to visit some of the family… and hopefully put some pics up later!
