Anna’s grandparents asked yesterday if they could take her to the summer house we were at last weekend to stay over the coming long weekend. We decided to leave it up to Anna herself, and before they all took off this afternoon, she’d changed her mind four times (or “changed her idea” as she put it). In the end she decided to go with her grandparents, and we’re sure they’ll have a great time.
The paranoid mother in me was of course a little, erm, paranoid, but this was put into perspective by Finnur’s oldest sister saying goodbye to her 19 year old daughter (whose birthday we attended today) as she took off to the north of Iceland, driving in her mother’s car with a few of her friends, to party over the weekend.
Yes, this is The Weekend of Commerce Workers. It is always held over the first weekend in August, and originally it was about giving commerce workers a few days off. Now, of course, it’s the biggest travel weekend of the summer, with festivals planned all over the country… with not so much time off for the poor commerce workers.
Since I don’t like traveling with the rest of the country, we’ll be hanging out mostly in the city – which shouldn’t be hard if the weather keeps up the gorgeousness. Seriously, it’s t-shirt weather up here in the north, and it’s making me nervous. I think I have to agree with a columnist in one of the newspapers here in Iceland that commented that Icelanders get nervous when the sun’s out since they keep waiting for the rain to come. Once the rain begins, we can finally feel calm in our bones. Yes, weird, but true. 🙂
One final note. We’ve now been here for two weeks, and it dawned on me today, that if we were taking our usual 3 week vacation, we’d be ramping up to leave. Yup, this next week would be our final week, and we would be spending it saying goodbye to everybody. And boy, oh boy, am I happy that this is not the case. We’re finally feeling like we can start relaxing properly, and the thought of boarding a plane in a weeks time feels preposterous. Yay, for another three weeks! 🙂
