Non-Day Number Two

I was overly optimistic this morning and asked Finnur to give Bjarki some yogurt for breakfast. The yogurt most emphatically disagreed with such treatment, and ran for the exit at the earliest opportunity. Thus began Non-Day Number Two, i.e. Finnur and Hrefna at home-base for yet another day with a sick Bjarki. And yes, it was another gorgeous weather day, albeit just a tad chilly.
The boy’s digestive system kept playing tricks on us the whole day though. He kept down morsels of food around 11am, then napped, and rejected the Cheerios at 2pm. He also rejected all attempts at feeding him Coke Cola, so I went to the pharmacy and got a proper “this is what you mix with water and give to children that are vomiting and have diarrhea”-mix. It’s essentially Pedialyte, but you have to add your own water, and we added a bit of juice to make it taste less horrible.
The poor boy must have been parched because he was ok drinking that stuff. It didn’t hurt that we gave him itty-bitty dosages in syringes every 5-10 minutes for an hour, and we all know that drinking from syringes is cool! After a second nap he kept down a tiny dinner (fish and rice), but only just. After a nice bath we moved on to a little bit of banana and three morsels of an apple, all of which stayed put.
So I’m cautiously optimistic that the worst is over, although the nurse I spoke to today mentioned that a viral stomach bug had been making the rounds this winter, spring and summer that seemed to take a couple of days off before re-emerging. Charming. He also has a very slight temperature, which I’m not sure how to interpret. Anyway, The Plan for tomorrow is to feed him frequent tiny bits, and hopefully that won’t create a backlash.
Today wasn’t a total bust though. I did go on a short drive around the city in a search for an open bakery (there was none to be found), and bumped into an old acquaintance from CA who told me not to even entertain the thought of moving to Iceland. Sigh. Finnur and I then sat out on the patio in the chilly breeze and hot sun, and enjoyed the outdoor air for a bit, and yes, I had on a fleece jacket.
It’s weird how we never intentionally sit outside in the sun in CA, but rather take refuge from it at every opportunity. Here in Iceland, it’s all about the sun, and taking as much advantage of it as possible. It’s a little weird!
At the end of the day we called Finnur’s parents to ask about the status of Independent Anna. She apparently had another great day, and was telling jokes (loudly) when I called. The only outward sign so far of sadness was one tearful moment this morning where she told her grandma she missed her little brother, but that was short lived. Yes, parents most definitely are much less the Center of the Universe here than in Parent-Controlled CA!
