[Photos taken 16 – 31 January 2025, posted online 03 August 2025. First Born is moving to Denmark tomorrow to finish her MS degree in biomedical engineering at DTU. I’m working on not freaking out too badly.]
January kept on being January, with weather-whiplashes, and more social gatherings. At some point I realized I needed to attempt to recharge after seemingly non-stop events and fun-times on top of a new job, so there were some solo mental health walks, in between more events and fun-times, and the new job.
Mostly though, there was snow.
Thursday 16 January 2025
All the snow completely gone, replaced by rain.
Friday 17 January 2025
Emma’s own book-keeping of her home-reading for school. She much prefers reading out-loud on her own, as she has very little patience for being corrected. I would then transfer the info into an online spreadsheet for the teachers (saving paper, we used to get a booklet to fill out). A few months later the school started using a new app, where I could only log reading on the day, and the day prior, which became incredibly stressful. The school was not sympathetic.
Starting a big new knitting project. I think I ended up starting it three times total!

When I started attending my brother’s lifting gym class, I wasn’t expecting to make actual new friends, but I did! We met for brunch, it was very nice!!
Driving to the “summer” house with a looming storm.
The gamers.
Dinner was amazing as usual.
Sunday 19 January 2025
The result of the storm… lots of snow.
Broom for size.
There should be a mountain visible in the background…
30 minutes later… no snow!
That’s one way to get more protein!
Tuesday 21 January 2025
Always fun.
View from my new workplace, snow in the mountains.
Saving Bjarki’s hide in math… He’d slowly realizing that maybe he should have put more math knowledge into long terms storage in his brain, rather than dumping it once exams were over. He managed to pass the course, so all went well.
Fresh cookies at home!
Sewing club, with a scrumptious dinner, and …
… dessert! Yum! I think by then I’d clued on to my social/internal batteries getting seriously low after seemingly non-stop gatherings for weeks on end, and starting a new job. Don’t get me wrong, I love meeting and chatting and hanging out, but it doesn’t seem to charge my internal batteries, only drain them (it’s a little like I’m performing, imagine being on stage for days on end). Solo time charges them, and there’d been very few solo days…

I’m able to work from home if I feel like it. A happy side-effect is being able to watch the birds eat their feed.
Thursday 23 January 2025
We had a little “after-work” event at work, where I met a few of the folks that usually work from home.
Spontaneous logo-replication art, and random noise. The CEO joked that he could probably spin this into a story about wonderfully dedicated employees.
Emma and her curly-when-wet-hair.
I live with cave people!
Friday 24 January 2025
More cookies, now two disguised as one! I think this was Emma.
… aaaand snow!
Saturday 25 January 2025
Snow-shoveling time! It really is quite satisfactory, and a nice easy workout (except when the snow is super thick and wet, then it’s an actual workout).
Keeping the garbage/trash cans accessible is much easier with the new shed.
Then it kept snowing! The pretty kind is pretty.
Emma ventured outside.
Busy bees freeing one of the cars from the snow.
Nice, pretty, and calm.
Sunday 26 January 2025
That’s a lot of snow…
… time to feed the birdies.
This house-structure is apparently called a “bird table”.
A big broom for size.
Lots of “customers”!
Waiting in line, so polite!
I was feeling antsy, so I went out for a mental health walk. That’s some impressive snow clearing.
Gorgeous views a little ways up the hill. I was so thankful that somebody had driven a snowmobile along the forest tracks, so they were easily passable.
It was so pretty out there.
The lake down the hill. Clouds had started gathering.
Proof it was me.
I took a turn off of the snow-mobile tracks, to reach the top of the hill. It got a little adventurous there on the way, with knee-deep snow.
Civilization up on the the hill, and the snow-mobile tracks made a reappearance, which was good since the tracks went where I was going.
Soul medicine!
Snow started falling again, the ominous clouds were getting closer.
I like how colorful the church is in winter. They keep changing it too.
Made it home just as the storm was starting for real.
Monday 27 January 2025
Yup, still white outside. But look at that nicely cleared parking lot!
Tuesday 28 January 2025
Admittedly starting to get a little tired clearing snow off of cars…
Walking around for an hour as Emma had her piano lesson.
A neighborhood full of impressive houses.
The lake was somewhat frozen over.
The dam still working as intended.
Winter-wonderland-y.
Our house had sprouted icicles.
A bit of greenery!
Emma still working on her Lego-kit.
Close to being done…!
Wednesday 29 January 2025
The view from the office, it was a really pretty day!
Bjarki’s guitar teacher of many years invited his students to attend a concert of his at the jazz corner in Harpa. We decided to eat dinner downtown.
Good fish!
On Harps’s 5th floor is a small performance area.
The view out the window.
Bjarki’s teacher, Hróðmar, started out playing on a steel-guitar (?), before moving to the guitar. He’s a talented multi-instrumentalist.
Deep in concentration.
We had a lovely time! The view as we exited. The house was surprisingly empty.
An ad for a local clothing label in the parking garage. Bjarki tried to look cool.
Thursday 30 January 2025
Road conditions deteriorated as it got warmer, the snow started sort of melting, and turned into sludge.
Nice to get a fruit delivery! Apparently there was sun somewhere on the planet!
Birds braving the shitty weather to eat.
Attempting to clear a channel to the drains in the street.
Oh, snowing again?
The snowing stopped, and the melting continued. The backyard got a sunken look to it.
Friday 31 January 2025
I attended a medical appointment with mom, and it turned out the hospital required masking due to illnesses spreading too fast.
Yay! Parking lot got a good scraping without me needing to ask for it! Afterwards I went and cleared the ridges that got left behind.
Dinner before a show!
Walking into the old movie theater in Hafnarfjörður, now mostly a concert venue.
Somebody had asked if I wanted to got see live music and I said yes, and it was a lot of fun! So much energy in the room!
The concert group! What a fun way to end January!!
