New Eruption / Elly@Theater / Brass Orchestra Concert

[Photos taken 21 – 30 November 2024, posted online 30 March 2025. It’s confusing blogging so far backwards, just last night I forgot it was already 2025 after writing 2024 one too many times earlier that day!]

On 20 November 2024, the seventh eruption in the Reykjanes-Sundhnúka-volcanic-eruption-series began at 23:14 UTC (which is local time). The morning after I got a few photos of the plume.

That same day I had tickets to the theater, and then life just stumbled onwards in flashes of the same as usual. Christmas shopping loomed large in my mind as Black Friday/Cyber Monday arrived, but I managed to keep going to the gym. I finished the month of November at a brass orchestra concert, and by voting for a new government.

Airplane fresh from take-off from Reykjavik airport, and the volcanic plumes in the distance.
Closer-up.
As seen from a window of Reykjavik University.
Signage directing people to remnants from WWII.
It was a cold day!
Cozy web-cam viewing in the living room. As usual, the literal line of volcanic fire had begun to “coagulate” into just a few active spots.
It was now the correct week to join some friends for dinner and the theater!
Was yummy.
Hiking buddies transformed into theater buddies for the night.
One of the rooms in the restaurant has a crazy/nerve-wracking “chandelier”.
We had really good seats.
Intermission.
It’s a show about an Icelandic singer, named Elly Vilhjálms, who had a wonderful voice, but ended up with men who were alcoholics and/or control freaks. Her work still endures, she’s sort of the sound of her generation. Magically, the actress portraying her just nailed her singing style, and the show went by in a flash.
The cast taking their well deserved bows.

Birds waiting for lunch.
Lunch!
The eruption kept chugging along. This time around a lot of lava went towards the power station and the Blue Lagoon, but the berms held. However, in only11 hours, the lava reached the Blue Lagoon’s parking lot and engulfed it, along with a temporary service building. This left the Blue Lagoon in a bit of a bind, and for a few days (after they reopened) guests had to arrive by bus from a stop in Grindavík town. They did rig up a (very expensive) new parking lot inside the berms in a few weeks though.
I got to practice my braiding skills. I’ve gotten a bit rusty!

Sunday 24 November 2024

I brought carbs for…
… students working hard!
The veggie-boxes were quickly losing their cover as more winter-wind arrived.
I can never remember what the square thing with the circle and the dot means…
Dinner with old coworkers. There had just been a new round of layoffs, and now we were all “free”!
I was taking the trash out, and figured there was an inkling of something in the sky. My phone saw the aurora better than my eyes!
I went to feed the birds, and there was a bright streak in the sky!
The birdfood.
Busy students, hard at work to finish a final project.

Yule-tide decorations appeared at the cafe.
At home I found that our students had bought non-alcoholic bubbly to toast to being done with their 12-week courses!
Emma started putting in requests for Christmas presents…
The weather was walk-inspiring.
The bird’s eye view?
Yes, please!
More festive decorations!

Such an exciting life, getting the car cleaned.
One of Finnur’s dinner specialties.

Wednesday 27 November 2024

The insane “Black Friday/Cyber Monday” discount days were about to start, and I went to the mall to scout for Christmas presents to perhaps buy online in the next few days. A ridiculous amount of brain-power and time went towards buying Christmas presents this time around.
It was very quiet at the mall, as the sales hadn’t started.
Spotted a rainbow while waiting at a red light.
Hello friendly fruit-ies.
I found this at the mall. Quite festive!
Always fun to enter the gym, and see a photo of baby bro.

Thursday 28 November 2024

Fall foliage all grounded.
Thanksgiving turkey at a cafeteria!
Scouting a yarn-store.
I arrived home to muffins!
Drying the behemoth of a fluffy sweater/blanket.
Rarely have I spent as much time taking cars to the shop as this winter. Our oldest car got some electric heart attack, and one of the backing sensors died, along with some “decorative” lights.

Friday 29 November 2024

Favorite cafe/bakery time!
Hair-cut time.
Freshly shorn.

Saturday 30 November 2024

Getting a photo of Bjarki so I’d have one from November. He manages to evade my camera more often than not!
Making up for lost time at the gym.
Making my way up to a church for the annual brass orchestra concert.
They were apparently producing snow for cross country skiing?
I knew a surprising number of the players and people in the audience!
The band.
The program.
Three generations.
Concentration personified.
They’ve gotten quite good over the years. Hard to believe this is an amateur group.
The sun setting at 15:30.
The picturesque church.
In a line of cars to go vote.
The voting site was busy.
There were no lines.
Hmmm… which list to vote for!?!?
Next up: birthday party!
The kids are growing up!
At home, Anna had made dinner. Yum!
I finished this packed day, and thus the month of November, with a Gloomhaven-gaming session!
