Faxi Campsite / Flúðir Folf / Finnur’s 50th
[Photos taken 25 – 31 July 2024, posted online 14 October 2024. It’s chilly but beautiful out there. ]
One day, Emma noted that she’d never slept in a tent, and we decided that was something we should probably fix. A few days later, we lucked out in getting invited to join some friends at a campsite by the waterfall Faxi .
We arrived just as the most recent rain-storm was passing, stayed for a couple of nights, and managed to pack up the tent just before the next rain-storm arrived. We tried Frisbee golfing (folfing) for the first time, and it was a resounding success for all.
We returned home in the rain, caught out breaths for a few moments before attending a multi-Christening/Confirmation, and then it was Finnur’s 50th birthday!

Checking out the waterfall Faxi (“horse’s mane”).
Bjarki saying farewell, with his most teenage-y face, as he opted to stay behind with Anna, who had work.
When we arrived at 6 in the afternoon, it was to a deluge of rain, but it thankfully didn’t last very long.
The weather was nice enough to sit outside, as long as you had a roof.
Once the rain passed, we made short work of putting our very, very old tent up.
We borrowed a really powerful air-pump for the air-mattress, but that was also when I realized the air-mattress was quite a bit skinnier than I’d thought. Both myself and Emma still somehow managed to fit on it.
… 20 July 1999!! Yup, this was the tent Finnur and I bought when we were a young couple, so it’s somewhere between 25 and 30 years old!?!
The hungry people being drawn to the food-maker.
Dinner in the palace.
There was a short walk to the bathrooms, and dish-washing facilities.
The manly-kitchen-men.
The path back to our site went through a tree-line.
After dinner, Emma and myself decided to check out the waterfall, at the edge of the site.
There’s a fish-ladder next to the waterfall! People for scale.
Selfie-time!
Close-up of the fish-ladder.
The view from the ladder.
Lovely flowers.
One final overview photo.
A sheep-sorting fence.
Walking back as a rainbow appeared.

The tent-dwellers after the first night. Finnur got to sleep in the mobile-home, as I was feeling adventurous. I heard some rain in the night, but the old tent held, and we were dry and quite toasty.
There was a smattering of people on the site. This is just a tiny part of it.
The skies trying to decide what the weather was going to be like.
The big-car was having an issue, so we’d traveled in “my” car. It did pretty good.
Park-map.
Time for some disc-golf!
At the frisbee golf course start . We played “Texas scramble”, where the group is split into teams, and the best throw per team is used as the basis for the next throw.
Every park needs a pretty bridge.
Action shot!
A couple of discs and the goal.
We found a play-area among the trees.
Classic.
Making progress.
There were owls in the trees!
A picturesque spot. I almost threw my disc into the river.
Posing with nature.
The latter half of the course was hillier than the first half.
Proof I was there.
Sooo close!
Once the fun folf was over, (we didn’t keep track of the scores) we headed to the local swimming pool .
I snuck a photo over the fence. There’s a whole pool to the right as well, and it was almost hot enough to be a hot tub.
Steam coming out of the ground all over the place around the parking lot. There’s a lot of hot water in the ground there.
On the hunt for ice-cream.
Found it!
Dinner was a classic affair.
Emma and myself did the dishes.
Finally some calm skies.
S’mores in the making.
Skyjo-time!

The owners of the parked mobile-home next to us showed up for a bit, and Emma got to pet their dog. They also packed up and left before the rain hit.
Vehicles were on the move, as rain was coming. The roads were not in great shape.
Some decided to stay put, like this crazy contraption.
Evidence of mud.
With rain on the way, we hurried to pack the tent, and the palace-foyer.
Almost done!
The palace-foyer coming down.
They sell their own handmade chocolates!
The food was good!
More food!
Emma loved the chocolate horse that came with her dessert.
The dessert in question.
Must. Not. Buy. Chocolate… It was close but I managed to leave empty handed.
Hello rain at home.

Walking to a church downtown for a family Christening and Confirmation.
A lovely group of kids that live abroad.
Clothing choice on point.
“Our” table at the post-ceremony-feast.
Sometimes the light hits just right.
Posing for photos.
Siblings!
Also siblings!

Bjarki suggested months before the day that we bring Finnur this on his 50th birthday for breakfast (inspired by Breaking Bad ), and Bjarki even reminded me on the day!
Happy 50th Finnur!
It was a relatively quiet day, but shortly before dinner we all sat down, and Finnur opened his presents.
The birthday “boy”.
The presents were basically a “rip-off” of our camping trip: frisbee golf discs, a disc-bag, a telescopic disc-fetcher, and the Just One game.
We went out for dinner so the birthday-man wouldn’t have to do the cooking.
“Can I eat now?”
The kids got ice-cream for dessert!
Tuesday 30 July 2024
For years, we’ve handed Bjarki’s clothes down to his first cousin, who now lives in Sweden. There was a trip to Sweden happening, so I finally sorted through the piles of textiles that had accumulated. Much of it went straight to the recycling center. I love a good deadline!

The weather kept being weird with unusually high winds in what is usually a calm time of year.
I stepped on the Boditrax machine at the gym, and am still “in the green”…
I did 2 km of rowing, the pace was pretty good.
Anna was cooking, and she needed sugar snap peas. They took forever to find at the store!
The chef. It was yummy! Thus endeth July!
