Jogging Resumes / UT Messan / Endless Snow

[Photos taken 01 – 10 February 2024, posted online 02 July 2024. The weather could be nicer.]

Two weeks after seriously straining my calf “dance-jumping”, I showed up for the last session of the nature running course. It was a leisurely jog through one of the small forested areas.

I made it to a couple of other runs, but was clearly playing chicken with my calf muscle. An appointment with a physical therapist would reveal that one of my left butt muscles was essentially on strike, causing all sorts of havoc down below.

I also got to attend an annual IT conference in town on behalf of my company, which was a nice change of scenery. Aside from that, I seemed to shovel a lot of snow?

What a difference in daylight a couple of weeks make in the January – February window! This was at 17:42, which two weeks ago was solidly sunset time.
That little forest has a surprising number of paths through it.
Somebody left half a barrel!
Quick gathering of breaths while our guide told us the lay of the land.
A pretty waterfall, and evidence of sunset beginning.
Same waterfall, now with people in front!
The route according to Strava.

I was among the first to raise my metaphorical hand when asked “would you like to attend the annual IT Mass (UT Messan) conference on behalf of the company”. This is our Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation giving a keynote. She’s a lively presenter, and not surprisingly spent the time harping on the need to incorporate AI everywhere fast, and be unafraid of change.
Oh my goodness! The last machine I worked on before I left Marel, and an old coworker were both in attendance!
The views from Harpa are always nice.
Free food!
Taking my turn being a booth-guard-er. Mostly I just chatted with familiar faces, I knew more people that I thought I would.
Once I was done booth-guarding, I went to a few lectures. This one was fun, particularly because just a few hours earlier, the Reykjavik University (where she’s a professor) had been hit with a serious ransomware attack.
Looked like a fun course!
We’re so hosed.
Oooops.
Last hike up the stairs to see my old university professor, now university president, give a closing talk.
Getting flashbacks from undergraduate lectures.
Was super happy that my jogging partner-in-crime and her team at the National University Hospital (Landspítalinn) got an award for digital progress
Time to skedaddle!
Still trying (without much to show for it) to keep track of which My little pony books were passing through the house.

Included in the nature jogging course was one free jog with the regular guided running groups. Thus I found myself outside a swimming pool in nearby Mosfellsbær shortly before 9 in the morning…
The 7.5 km route according to Strava (larger when clicked). We went past Finnur’s old family house, but I missed it because of all the trees! That line on the bottom left is where we had to turn back because the paths under the mountain were impassable due to snow.
The weather was weird, not particularly cold, but snowy, and occasionally blustery.
A large portion of the route at the start had not been cleared of snow, so there was quite a bit of snow-walking where you step into deep holes left by others. This was about where the path got ok-ish.
Surprisingly pretty.
This is Finnur’s old stomping ground.
This beginners group always walks up inclines, which suited me fine.
Turning back the way we came because the planned route was impassable due to snow.
I’ve driven under this bridge a lot of times, but never gone over it until now. It was about this time that my calf muscle began complaining again, but I think I managed to not really injure it again…
Siblings at a birthday party…
… immediately followed by a dinner with more friends! They put on a massive fajitas spread!
It kept snowing, and I kept pushing the snow away from the parking lots…

Found a book Bjarki was supposed to read for school at the library, phew!
Trying to buy shoes for these guys is non-trivial.
Finally, a moment without more snow falling!

Yet another eruption! The clouds was sort of visible from the 6th floor office, in between buildings.
The first time the lava flowed over the road to Grindavík/Blue Lagoon. It was very fast moving, and soon also took out the hot-water pipe to the rest of the houses on the peninsula! This eruption also stopped after about a day. The road has since been reopened, with a new surface on top of the new lava… at lease twice.

Gym selfie.
Submitting an offer on an apartment, signing electronically. So happy true signatures in person with pens are on the way out.

Saturday 10 February 2024

Out again on a jog in the snow.
Nice view!
This is where the Strava heat-map feature really comes in handy, as it automatically maps the forests for you, and you’re not relying on hand-drawn maps of varying quality.
Our route according to Strava. That sliver of a forest around the top of the hill is quite nice! Shortly after we made a U-turn, my darned calf started squawking again, and there was a lot of walking on the way back.
