[Photos taken 12 – 13 August 2023, posted online 31 May 2024. Eruption is still ongoing, but has quieted down a lot from the explosive start, it’s bubbling, as opposed to squirting.]

With Finnur mostly stuck in bed with his very bruised foot (warning, photo below), we decided this would be the day of shopping.

All the offspring needed clothes for winter, so I took them shopping. We began by eating breakfast at our favorite cafe, before sorting the younger two out with some clothes. Then I sent them back to the apartment with their haul, while Anna and myself kept going, having a lot more stamina for the horror that is clothes shopping.

Anna by the funky things outsides of the Amos Rex art museum. Not pictured is the massive construction area to the right. We didn’t actually try to enter the museum.
Earlier that morning: The house opposite our apartment in the morning sun.
It was a lovely day, and it was a luxury to be able to open the windows.

WARNING!! BRUISED AND SWOLLEN FOOT-PIC BELOW!!

Finnur’s VERY bruised and swollen foot. Ouch.
“Lunch” at Starbucks after a getting the younger ones some new clothes at the local mall.
Then we sent Bjarki and Emma off on their own back to the apartment with their new clothes, and Anna and myself continued roaming.
Exciting life, sitting on the floor in a little-used changing room in a basement, waiting for Anna to emerge. We did score a pair of pants for her though (yay!) so it was worth it!
Blood-sugar fix in a pretty cafe.
Anna really wanted to visit a second-hand clothes shop, and thankfully there was one close by.
A small mall.
Street view.
By the Kamppi Chapel of Silence. It looked closed, so no silence for us.
It was time for the last dinner in Helsinki, so I went on a scouting mission to find a non-fully-booked restaurant that was within walking distance (even for Finnur!), that would satisfy all tastes. I lucked out at the second one, claimed a table, and then told the others where to go.
A few minutes later, a VERTICAL Finnur appeared with the kiddos.
Steaks and pizzas, as requested!
Hungry yet?
Dessert, yum!
Heading back, Finnur giddy to be up and about, although he was slow as a snail.
Still so happy our building had an elevator!
The view outside at 10 in the evening.

Looking out one of the windows into the back-alley, that surprisingly had an old mural.
All packed up, and ready to go to the airport. We’d had a lovely stay!
Finnur decided he was good enough to walk to the tram/bus station, so off we went.
We found a bakery/cafe opposite the tram/bus station, and had brunch.
We had a few empty recyclable bottles that we needed to get rid of, and after some research we discovered the bottle recycling centers were in every little shop/kiosk.
You get money to spend in the shop you recycle in!
Waiting for the tram (or was it a bus?)
At the central train station. Somebody was handing out free ice-cream samples!
We made it to the airport, and requested the wheelchair we’d ordered for Finnur. It took forever for the wheelchair to arrive, so it was good we’d arrived quite early.
Yet another family member being wheeled through an airport.
The Icelandair plane.
Goodbye Finland!
Iceland’s Vatnajökull glacier?
Hello Iceland!
Our Finland mementos: adorable grocery bags, we love them so! And thus concluded our visit to Finland!
