Kayaking & Eruption-Monitoring on Vacation Eve
[Photos taken 08 – 13 July 2023, posted online 14 April 2024. Today I want to clear out the garage, ooof. ]
We’d gone ahead and bought a couple of kayaks at Costco, and then scratched our heads long and hard on how to transport them to and from the lake. Thankfully we found roof-racks for the big car, and after some more head-scratches, the roof racks were installed, and a YouTube video consulted on how to fasten kayaks on top. We invited the soon-to-be-Swedes to the summer-house for a bit of a farewell, and lucked out with the weather!
We then held our collective breath until yet another volcanic eruption began. It was far away from everywhere, and would last for just under a month.
Finnur remained at the summer house, working remotely during the day, and oiling/staining wood outside of working hours. There’s a lot of wood that needs to be taken care of there… Meanwhile I cooked (once), weeded, gymmed, and prepped for my formal summer vacation!

Success! Emma in one of our kayaks on the Skorra-valley-lake.
Finnur and my brother trying to work out how to attach the roof-rack to the big car. Instructions were read!
Meanwhile, the rest of us were toasting on the deck.
Whoa!
Double success! Kayaks fastened!
Emma doing the jump-jump.
My brother had gone kayaking with Bjarki and his son in the other kayak. Emma impatiently waited for them to return.
They crossed the lake! I could see them returning in the far distance.
Pétur approaching the shore.
Bjarki and his passenger, both light-weights!
The water is very shallow until it suddenly isn’t.
I somehow managed to talk Pétur into taking Emma out for a bit, but on a timer because dinner was approaching fast.
Dinner time!
Mom with her steak.
Making sure he didn’t dive head-first into the tub!
Still sitting comfortably outside at 9 in the evening.
Roping new people into the Skyjo -cult while the sky sunset-burns in the background.
Midnight sky.

The following day was also sunny!
The kids wanted to kayak some more, so the kayaks were readied.
Our guests were packing up, so Finnur went out with the boys and then Emma on a quick timed tour.
While I hung out at by the water’s edge, a large group of horses appeared and thundered by!
Animated gif of the horses running by my car (wait for it to load).
Emma getting her photo taken.
Saying goodbye, as our guess had to return home and resume packing!
Useful for shoe-drying!
We headed back to town around 5 pm, and decided to stop and eat at our favorite Borgarnes cafe. First, obligatory photo towards mount Hafnarfjall .
It was weirdly empty inside…
… because everyone was outside!
At home, Anna had made a strawberry-rhubarb-pie!
Looks so good.
About to disappear!

Pre-dinner dandelion-fight about to commence.
Finnur was away oiling the wood at the summer house, so I cooked, this time chicken fajitas…
Finnur reported on his progress sanding a side of the house…
By 9 the dandelions were no more.
Dude hiking by the webcams showing the eruption by Litli-Hrútur (Little-Ram).
Not sure where I copied this from, but people are a little nuts.

The eruption cloud was visible from the 6th floor of my workplace.
A post-it reminding people to keep the door open, as the little computer inside the cupboard was getting a bit warm streaming the eruption video.
Waiting for lunch to arrive. We pre-ordered lunch the week before, and then got deliveries from various restaurants. I’m told this pool table is rented along with the floor!
Finnur was still up at the other house, staining the deck, so to Ikea we went for dinner.
Reliably meh-food.
Anna tried a bed, and found a hidden message!
Blurry message.
Emma abusing her status as youngest sibling.
Oiling/staining in progress…

My psych-medication.
This gym excels at re-inventing its insides. That time they decided to decimate the old office, which was taking up a lot of precious space, relocate it where the small child-care-space used to be (it fell out of use during Covid, and never came back), and installed a new fancy exercise-room instead.

Biked to work!
Sloshed tea at work! It was my last day before going on summer vacation!!
Packing for a 10-lady-trip to gorgeous Thórsmörk the following day!! I reckoned that the red linens would be hard to misplace!
