Vacation: Birthdays & US Travel Begins
[Photos taken 23 – 31 July 2022, posted online 11 March 2023. Daylight is staying noticeably longer, the sun is higher in the sky, but we’re also frozen solid = window-weather. ]
Week two of vacation was swimming, jogging, preparing and then departing for our trip to the US, celebrating birthdays, and deciding to quit my job. So, relatively calm? (60-ish images total)
Saturday 23 July 2022
Post-swim ice-cream.
Earlier in the day, Anna had made tear-away-bread.
Emma enjoying said bread.
Sunday 24 July 2022
We decided Anna was correct, the white borders around the little windows had to go. Yay for more painting!
I volunteered Finnur as a plumber to switch out non-functioning bath-equipment for a new one at my oldest brother’s place.
Finnur can seemingly squat forever.
Meanwhile, cousins had fun.
An attempt at cat-holding.
Two cats on a window sill.
“No photos please, I’m eating!” Yours truly caught being impolite!
The view from our living room in the evening.
Monday 25 July 2022
I kept spending my mornings at the same café, by the culture center buildings.
White border gone. Now, the biggest remaining problem was what to do with the green wall, decoration wise. (Still unsolved)
I went out on a slow jog… the top of the hill we’re on is under construction, see the mounds of Earth?
Roses, very good to deter jaywalking.
Proof it was me.
Tuesday 26 July 2022
I tried jogging on the treadmill at the gym, and would eventually destroy my old lifting shoes. They’re not made for running!
I can’t remember why I was picking Emma up from the family park, but apparently I did?
Wednesday 27 July 2022
A walk in the rain.
Somebody left a packet of sugar snap peas on a rock?
Earth-work going on in the distance. Lots of houses planned there.
I think I was trying out some new feature in Pokemon Go, I don’t think I was very impressed.
The great switch-front switch-a-roo continued, and this dimmer also got the ax in exchange for app-controllable led-bulbs.
I failed at having the patience to perfectly level the closets in Bjarki’s room. The floor was so crooked I gave up after fighting for an hour or more.
Tools of the switch-a-roo trade include a headlamp.
Thursday 28 July 2022
We finally had mental-and-schedule space to host part #2 of Bjarki’s 15th birthday.
The birthday boy himself.
The sofa getting a real trial run.
The fast-growing guest.
Hot tub got used!
Perhaps a little ambitious.
Some manly men.
Friday 29 July 2022
The face of a person that has just resigned from their job. Earlier in July, Marel had actually fired 5% of their workforce to cut costs, I wished they’d asked for volunteers.
It was Finnur’s birthday! He got presents!
We then went out to dinner to Harpa’s Hnoss .
The view will hopefully be more interesting when they finally finish the fancy building next door.
We were home again by 10 pm, and the weather was so insanely nice, and Pokemon Go’s new feature was demanding attention, so I went out for a bit.
A sunset in slow progress at 10:10 pm.
The Buddha stupa in orange.
Saturday 30 July 2022
I took Emma to buy sandals for our upcoming US trip. It’s not always easy to find shoe-stores when traveling.
Some old friends who were on vacation in Iceland stopped by for a bit. The kids just keep getting bigger!
Also in the news was Yet. Another. Earthquake. Swarm. I started worrying that an eruption would disrupt our tightly-planned travel-plans.
Sunday 31 July 2022
Status of car battery upon arrival to Keflavik airport.
Standing in line…
Shoe check. Much to my dismay, my shoes turned out to be unfit for long walks, and were ditched somewhere in the US.
Keflavik airport is expanding yet again, and I’m sure once that’s done, it’ll still be too small.
Stupidly small.
Boarding.
We were on a 2-3-2 seater. I was out in front, Anna & Bjarki behind me, and Finnur & Emma behind them, to maximize window seatage.
It was a pretty day in Iceland.
The east coast of Greenland.
Greenland melt-puddles, ooof.
We took the train to downtown Seattle. One mentally ill person journeyed part-way with us, peeing on the floor upon entry.
Our hotel (from the epic travel-planning slideshow.)
Soft bed! But first… dinner!
We found a dumpling place close by that was open late. Then it was straight back to the hotel and to bed! Hello USA!
