May-Mayhem: Sunny Days, Party-Prep & e-Biking Norðurárdalur

[Photos taken 21 – 27 May 2022, posted online 11 December 2022. Finnur’s on his way to the UK for a work-trip, I’m in charge of the fort.]

The weather took a turn for the absolutely gorgeous, and I kept not using it to oil all the wood. Other garden work happened, an injured Emma cheered on her team at a gymnastics meet, we attended a graduation party, while preparing for our own graduation party, and I went on a 42 km e-bike ride up by Mount Baula. The temp topped 20 C / 68 F, and one of my brothers popped in for a visit with mom and a dog she was dogsitting.
A furball trying to stay in the shade!
Anna renewed the beer-snail-traps from last year.
Anna’s gardens.
So. Warm!
Anna playing with Skrugga.
We decided to fill the hot tub. 🙂
Anna with the new sugar-snap-peas trellis-pot.
Some summer flowers planted.
Quite pretty!
I was less than thrilled to discover that the bird-feed I’d been using included grass-seeds! That apparently the birds didn’t like very much.
Ooof, so much weeding in my future!

Gymnastics-braids.
Emma and I drove to Selfoss. Her foot was still sore, so she was only there as a substitute for the floor-dance.
I went to get breakfast at a new coffee house by the food hall.
Nice cafe!
Warm up in progress.
As luck would have it, the girl that was missing was in a spot on the opposite side that Emma had practiced, so she didn’t participate at all, except by supporting her team-mates from the sideline. Unfortunately, Emma’s team didn’t medal this time around.
The crowded audience area.
Group photo before we took off. Emma has my sprouting genes.
We ate burgers and fries at the food hall.
Such a successfully designed area!
At home, Finnur was busy washing the winter away.
Later that day we attended a graduation party! Wheee!
Listening to speeches.
In the glaring sun!

Bjarki was outside playing basketball the whole afternoon, and had totally forgotten about this “sunburn” thing.
I found myself by the school at 9 pm, and it was pretty packed.

Unexpected object inside a restroom at the gym!
Finnur was busy, so Hrefna the Lazy Chef took the kids to the Sushi Train.

Wednesday 25 May 2022

We got confirmation that Anna would indeed be graduating from her junior college (FG) the following Saturday, and got super lucky in managing to secure a party room at the Old Houses Museum (Árbæjarsafn).
By the house the party would be held in, on the upper floor.
Thankfully there was a drivable road leading to it for the guests that had a hard time walking long distances, and for us to bring in drinks and food.
Lots of tables and chairs!
Thankfully, also lots of all the plates and cutlery needed.
A few of the residents of the museum.
Then it was dress-shopping time! This one did not get chosen.

On this Jesus-Goes-To-Heaven-Day, which is a public holiday in Iceland, it was time for a long bike-ride up in Borgarfjörður, or more specifically Norðurárdalur..
The route was about 42 km long. Mount Baula is that lightly colored extrusion at the top of the map.
We set out from Varmaland (Warmth-Land).
The sky was a little ominous, but the weather stayed fine.
A sign trying to steer drivers on regular cars away from this area due to the road being bad.
A ridiculously large house in the distance.
A much more interesting challenge up ahead.
Challenge in progress!
This area has a lot of cool rock formations.
Looking ahead.
That’s mount Baula (Cow’s Moo) up ahead.
A nice road to ride on.
Time to feed the riders.
We ate opposite this cool location for a summer house.
The dog in the backpack was very good at barking loudly at the stray horse we encountered, and the sheep a bit further on.
After riding towards Mount Baula for a long time (such a pretty view), we turned, and then it was time to climb.
We stopped while we still had shelter from the wind to eat a bit.
Still some ice left in the shaded parts.
Yours truly.
A very Icelandic bridge.
Looking back as we finish reaching the highest point.
Then it was full speed ahead down the hill on the other side! That was a fun ride! We then rode through what was a ridiculously idyllic farm area with tall trees, and sheep everywhere. I believe we even rode past one sheep that had given birth a minute prior!
Rest stop, and the mountains over house #2.
During this last re-fueling stop, somebody noticed that my rear-tire was very close to flat. Thankfully the guides had pumps, and that took care of that.
We were getting quite good at getting both bikes up on the rack.
Obligatory stop in Borgarnes and Cafe Kyrrð in the yellow house.
Happy biker about to get food!
Mmm, quiche!
Savoring the view by the sea before driving all the way home.

Emergency dress-shopping for the upcoming graduation the next day. This was a contender, but I wanted something with brighter summer colors.
Finding a hair-clip to move away from the endless hair-bands.
The lady on the evening shift at the flower shop was a champ for putting up with a tired mother and her tired daughter as we navigated getting napkins and flowers for the party the next day.
