An Autumn Wedding & Outdoors-ing

2021-10-01Us Standard

[Photos taken 01 – 16 October 2021, posted online 29 January 2022. Covid is in the house, but the timing of human interactions was such that it made sense for Finnur & Emma to move and hide from the rest of us in our old apartment at Finnur’s parents’ place, while I held down the covid home-fort with Bjarki & Anna who by this point have both contracted it.]

October’s social highlight was without a doubt a long-planned wedding in Finnur’s family (photographed by yours truly), which happily fit snugly in between covid-waves, and nobody got infected!

There was also a birthday party on my side of the family, autumn colors became all the rage, the sun got less and less inclined to shine on us, work hosted a clean-up day, some gardening happened, the gym was visited repeatedly, I went on an evening hike which I really need to repeat in brighter times, and then we hung out with some friends in the country. (35-ish images total)

Friday 01 October 2021

Work hosted a ‘plucking’ session, where if you went out and plucked garbage from the surrounding area (could also be your home area if you were working from home) you could come get a goodie bag. I clambered up on to the old lava field that separates my office from a big road and Ikea, as most of the low lying areas had already been combed clean.
Always classic to find a strip of tape in the wild from your own company when hunting down garbage…

Saturday 02 October 2021

Looking for posters to put on Bjarki’s walls, as his room looked bare.
Yay! Birthday party!! With guests!!
Emma enjoying Snapchat filters…

Sunday 03 October 2021

Extreme autumn colors!

Tuesday 05 October 2021

Arriving at the office at 9 am, the shadows becoming looooong… I kept parking by the trees to have that little bit of nature to enjoy before entering the building. I’m simple like that.

Wednesday 06 October 2021

I had vague plans to go out jogging on Wednesday afternoons, as Finnur was on music-school pick-up duty, but I’ve bailed a lot more often than I’ve made it. However, that particular Wednesday was just too darn gorgeous to spend entirely indoors…!
The always striking Snæfellsjökull, across the big bay.

Saturday 09 October 2021

Emma enjoying her copious Saturday-morning screen-time.
Finnur modeling as I frantically tried to remember how my big camera worked, because I’d been asked to photograph a family wedding that afternoon!!! (Panic, panic, panic!!)
A little while later, all dressed up, and sitting in a church!
A wedding in progress, with guests!! (They managed to slide in between covid waves!)
I hope they forgive me for posting a photo from a quick session we did! Afterwards there was a big proper party, and I ended up with something like 1700 images, of which 500 weren’t terrible. Congratulations to the happy couple!!
The ooooold couple at the party.

Sunday 10 October 2021

The sisters using the nice weather to work in the veggie garden. It was time to cut the salad down before winter hit.
Bjarki showed up and was cajoled into a photo frame, slightly against his will.
We kept being sad about the failed broccoli harvest.

Monday 11 October 2021

Oh, to have a better phone camera in low light. This fallen berry bunch was lightly coated in frost, just as the sun was rising as I arrived at work. Just too pretty to let go without at least attempting a photo!
While at work, I got a text message from Ikea that a light fixture I’d been waiting for had finally arrived. I remembered meeting my cousin a while back at Ikea, and discussing how she was also waiting for this light fixture, so I gave her a call and bought enough of them for two of us! It’s better to be safe than sorry with Ikea these days, their stock is in sorry shape. I think we’ve been waiting for six months for the doors to Bjarki’s clothing cabinet to show up!
Baby Bro about to teach a weight lifting class. Yes, there are more bars than just that one!
Meanwhile in teenager-land, candy and sugary drinks have begun multiplying on said teenager’s desk!

Tuesday 12 October 2021

Oof, the perils of dropping your mask onto the wrong part of your food tray…
I brought in a cocoa-sugar mixture, in the hope that I could make my own mocha at work using expresso from the coffee machine, and this milk “frother”, but the milk wasn’t really warm enough for it to really work. So, my pit-stop-at-the-cafe-before-work kept happening…
About to enter the kids’ school for the first time in eons, for a parent-teacher conference! It was the first time face-to-face meeting Emma’s & Bjarki’s teachers that they’d both had for over a year!
Anna’s school quarter was drawing to a close, and she put up a timeline of due-dates on her closet. I wish I’d have thought of that back in the day!

Wednesday 13 October 2021

Part of the walking group, as we were about to head out on that month’s afternoon hike. The destination had been changed at the last minute due to unfortunate weather conditions, and moved to Búrfellsgjá, which apparently is nice and calm when the other place is super windy!
The route, and elevation profile.
The path was so nice and big that it felt a bit silly to be wearing hiking boots!
Nice rock formation.
A slightly petrified selfie!
Old sheep-sorting fences, for when the sheep are gathered before winter arrives. Soon thereafter, the sun set.
By 7:30 pm it was pitch dark outside. No falling into that crack!
We made it up to the crater rim, but it was too dark to really see anything, so we just skedaddled right back down again. By this time the hiking boots felt slightly more sensible. We were just a hop and skip outside the urban area.
Quick stop for a snack at 8 pm. We then hiked back to the cars, and I hung out for a bit because otherwise I would have been home silly early! The parking lot was about a 12 minute drive from my house!!

Thursday 14 October 2021

By brother showed me his new favorite torture device, a treadmill that you can also turn into a “sleigh”. The belt becomes stubborn, and you have to exert force on it to move it, aka the “sleigh”. It’s actually quite well done!

Saturday 16 October 2021

Photo of our side of the house. We’ve been contemplating adding a “sun-room”, but haven’t found a way to do it that makes the neighbors happy, while still making sense for us.
Next up, a trip to house #2 (which still really needs a better moniker than that), where I had a board-game date, and enjoyed a scrumptious dinner with friends!
