Sewing Club Edinburgh Trip

2018-09-27Friends, Hrefna, UK Standard

[Photos from 27-30 September 2018, posted online 14 April 2019. Finnur hopped to Toronto and back this past week!]

A “sewing club” I belong to (which does no sewing, except of the social kind) went on its second weekend trip abroad this past autumn, this time to Edinburgh. (Gasp, I just realized I never posted any photos from our trip to Prague!!)

We rented a really nice apartment on airbnb, that had individual bathrooms per bedroom (a must for future excursions!) and we all had a grand time! (90-ish images total)

Thursday 27 September 2018

Ladies Who Leisure at Keflavik airport. The organizing committee correctly decided bubbly wine, and matching caps and scarfs were a must to get things off to a good start!
This is what we were leaving behind: Autumn in Iceland.
Selfie on board!
Closing up on Edinburgh.
Always fun to see foothills give way to lower lands.
About to land!
The view from our loft apartment.
My princess room.
This airbnb host knows their stuff!
So, apparently this apartment is very popular with for bachelorette parties, hence the Amour pillow!
The first order of business was to go shopping for supplies. We were located downtown, so there was a shop within walking distance.
Ourside The Dome, where we had a dinner reservation.
It was very thoroughly decorated!
Please don’t fall!
We discovered the Scots really like to decorate their restrooms!
Heading out.
After much searching we found a cocktail bar hidden in the basement, with just a tiny sign outside the door to indicate what was there. They served good stuff!

Friday 28 September 2018

The morning after, at a lovely cafe around the corner from our apartment, about to have brunch.
The view behind me.
Very hearty!
The group! It turns out 8 is a really nice number when it comes to booking tables.
Later that morning I went out in search of a place to sit down with my computer. I walked one block to find this fancy house and…
A coffee house hidden in a basement. Edinburgh is all about basements!
I nabbed the far-table, yay!
It was a busy place!
Drinking coffee is worth is just for the pretty foam pictures 🙂
A few hours later I emerged.
Walking down the hill to our apartment.
Our door was the second from the left. The door organization was a bit weird, as our door led directly to a stairwell that went up three floors!
Is this old-style table in the stairwell decorated with an Icelandic flag?
Nope, no of course not!
Our landing.
That’s one very brightly colored door!
We had a reservation for high tea, so we began making our way to the old town.
I suspect there is a law that demands there be a bag-piper on that bridge at all times!
I think the buildings behind me contain museums, but I still haven’t gone.
High tea location located!
It was a hop and a skip away from the royal mile.
It was a beautiful setting, and we got a great round table that fit all eight of us.
We played around with the portrait settings on our phones.
We got three rounds of trays like this one. It was very nice!
As we were leaving they were busy prepping a bridal exhibition!
The restroom did not disappoint!
A quick hop into a tourist shop. Lots of tartan!
Looking up the royal mile.
Making my way back to the apartment.
A great map of the city!
The castle.
Found some crazy shiny ear-rings!
Hi black taxi.
That evening we participated in a pub crawl!
I sizable number of people showed up!
At a student bar.
Our guide telling us a bit about the next destination.
The next-to-last stop.
Frankenstein (the dummy) did really appear on a stretcher, lowered down from the ceiling, and he even sat up, looked around and everything!
Fun theme!
Our very last stop was this one, where the band was playing the Star Wars cantina song. It was a hoot!

Saturday 29 September 2018

The following morning I ventured to a vegetarian place for brunch.
It was quite good!
We had ‘booked’ a free walking tour, so we hiked back to the royal mile, and found a green umbrella.
The view down the royal mile, as we waited for the tour to start.
Our guide telling us a bit about himself and his company before launching into Edinburgh’s history.
The first hour was basically spent walking around a big church (because there were so many things to say about various things).
The second hour involved a lot more walking.
The grave of famous dog, whose story is very much a story.
Walking down towards the Grassmarket.
Very Schottish!
Strolling past the sales stalls.
The caps came in handy as there was quite a chilly breeze blowing.
The castle from the south side.
Done walking, and about to go hunt for food.
Food and shelter acquired.
Walking back. We visited this street with Adda and Halli back in the day.
Crossing the royal mile from south to north involves a lot of steps!
Graffiti.
A silent disco in progress!
The view from my window.
All dressed up to go to a fancy dinner.
We went to the same fancy place as Finnur and I visited with Adda and Halli. It was just so opulent, we couldn’t find anything better.
Waiting on our table.
Again, a circular table for eight. So perfect!
Yet another fancy restroom photo!
I’m not even kidding!
A small night-cap. It was a good day!

Sunday 30 September 2018

Saying goodbye to my princess room, it was about time to head to the airport.
Lots of luggage!
This was a great apartment to stay in, highly recommend it!
The view out the kitchen window.
At the airport.
Breakfast.
Our plane, from the now defunct airline Wow, had arrived on time.
Waiting to board.
Yup, a WOW plane!
Pretty view over Scotland.
Can you tell the difference between Scotland and Iceland? Hmmm…
A box of chocolate for Finnur and the kiddos, and autumn colors still going strong.
Any talk of this being a “relaxing vacation” will be laughed at, I got almost no sleep! But it was still a lot of fun! 🙂
