Foster Family Reunion at Steig

2017-05-13Finnur's family, Us Standard

[Photos taken on 13 May to 14 May 2017, posted online 2 September.  I’m in denial about having a nasty head-cold.   27 August 2017.  At a cafe, where a girl is doing her math homework, and her (presumably older?) boyfriend is being impatient and a bit obnoxious but still hanging around, occasionally helping.  She’s telling him off though so they might make it.  ]

Just like three years ago, we attended the family reunion of Finnur’s dad’s foster family.  It was held at the Steig Guesthouse, close by the tourist attractions of Reynisfjara, and Dyrhólaey.

We drove there on Saturday, stayed the night at the guesthouse, and then drove back to town the next day, stopping at various places to let the kids out of the car, and, uhm, visit some Ingress locations/tourist traps.

Here are the photos from the family reunion (48 images total).

Saturday 13 May 2017

The view out the car window on the way to Steig. It was a beautiful day!  That’s a glacier by the way.

Driving from the mainroad to Steig (visible on the far left), we passed this swan in a luxurious nesting spot.

This is Steig.

We arrived at the Guesthouse Steig mid-afternoonish. Pretty much as we arrived, a large chunk of the group drove further inland to climb a steep hill, see incline starting on the right.

More of the cars and the hill.

The young ones ran up ahead.

Hmmm… that’s a fair way up.

The climbers were of all ages!

Up… up… up…

Two out of the top three dots by the peak are Anna and Bjarki!

Cars getting smaller…

Me and Emma ran into problems climbing over that grass to mud-border further up, as my sneakers lost their grip, and we kept sliding down. It was probably hilarious to watch, but not so fun to do!

The view to the left.

Ok, at least I was faster than the small toddler!

We made it to the top! It was very windy up there, as the hill shielded us climbers from the worst of it.

The last stragglers.

Huddling to protect against the wind.

The dog was the first to go down again. See the tiny cars?!?!

If only the weather had been nicer… I’m sure the view would have been spectacular. As it was, it was mostly eerie.

Group photo! Please don’t trip and fall backwards!!

Going back down again. I had neither the courage, nor the correct lens to capture the awesome and very deadly drop down on one side.

Back at Steig.  Our hosts still maintain a flock of sheep, many of whom were very pregnant.

A couple of new mothers with the lambs, hidden away from the main flock so they could bond properly, and get a good feeding going.

Emma was a lot more interested in the two rabbits than the sheep and the lambs. Here she is feeding them hay.

At dinner time, we all gathered in the new dining room to eat dinner together.

The old dining room was among the bedrooms, and was rather cramped. This new room is in a different building and is very nice!

Dinner! The food was excellent!

This was the evening of the Eurovision Song Contest finals. Thus the TV got turned on!

Our group table.

Dinner being consumed.

After dinner, I took Emma out to the other house, where she wanted to play in “her” playroom. Then it was bedtime, after which I was too tired to rejoin the group on the other side. I think all the others had a grand time though!

Sunday 14 May 2017

The next day, we drove to a nearby church.

Charming country church.

Looking from the cemetery by the church towards the sea.

Checking out the church on the inside.

One of the family members is an actual priest, and he had the keys. Here he is signing the guestbook.

Bjarki looking at the artwork.

Emma tries out the pulpit.

Sitting and chatting.

After a while, and a bit of singing, we all went out and looked for ancestors in the cemetery.

It was a wee bit windy.

Much discussion ensued.

I was unclear whether these were unmarked or unused graves.

Photo time, and then some had to take off.  We went back to Steig for a bit before heading off.

Back at Steig, this sheep just popped out two lambs!

Kids watching.

Quick group photo before we left.

Bjarki with his new best buddy.

We had a great time, and look forward to coming back in three years.

p.s. Anna went back to Steig in June to help out for a week, much like her dad and granddad did when they were younger.  So great to have access to safe work experience!
