Italy Day 5: The Last Day
[This HAPPENED on 06 August 2014, but was WRITTEN in blogform on 2 November 2014. Read at your own risk.]
As with all vacations, the last day came too soon. There was no arguing with the date on our airplane tickets though, so that was it.
Our flight wasn’t until late in the evening, so to make the most of the day we arranged to return the keys around 10:30, giving us enough time to visit Turin (Torino) for a bit, before driving all the way back to Lyon, France and flying home. (Yes, it would have been smart to finalize our sleeping plans before booking the airplane tickets, because we could have flown home from Milano an hour away instead of from Lyon, some four hours away. Maybe next time?!)
But yes, some pictures from the day. (30 images total)

Thankfully, we didn’t have to clean the house before leaving, but we did leave it tidy. Packing takes forever!

The back of the house. Our landlady arrived shortly thereafter, armed with cleaning supplies, and we set out for Torino (which I have a really hard time calling Turin).

We ate at the tourist-friendly-square of Piazza San Carlo, which was next to the Egyptian Museum, our main goal.

The restaurant ripped us off by bringing out these unasked for stinky-cheese appetizers ‘on the house’ but then charged us for them.

At the entrance to the Egyptian Musuem.

The Egyptian Museum houses the world’s second largest collections of Egyptian antiquities after Cairo, but was under heavy remodeling when we visited. There were only three showrooms/sections open, but that was plenty for us. We were a little short on time!

Bjarki was a little apprehensive about standing alone quite so close to this actual mummy. Yeah, not a cartoon!

The exhibit focused on how the Egyptians treated their dead, and yes, that museum has a lot of mummies!

Up on the wall was a copy of the Rosetta stone. Very cool!

Rich important people got nested sarcophagi. The golden one on the right fit into the bigger black and golden one in front, that fit into the big black one on the left!

At this point in time we decided to part ways with Holla, Óli and their gang, because they still had a few more days to spend in France, so they weren’t in a hurry to leave Torino like us. But first, a group picture!

Happily, there was no line to get into the 13 km border tunnel to France. This meant we could stop in Chambery on the way back to eat and do a bit of shopping.

We took no photos in Chambery, but did manage to buy stuff at H&M (Icelanders!) and eat a rather sad dinner. This is us filling up the tank of our rental before returning it at the airport.

Our flight left at 10 pm, and was mostly uneventful. The hardest part was that Emma was utterly exhausted, and spent at good 10-15 minutes screaming her head off at me and Finnur before Finnur allowed her to sink to the floor, where she crawled into a corner and promptly feel asleep. Finnur tried picking her up off the floor a little while later, but she started screaming again, so he just put a blanket under her and let her resume sleeping on the airplane floor. Kids!
