Bjarki Figures Out Reading
This post is just to commemorate that Bjarki ‘read’ for the first time today. And by ‘reading’ I mean that he sounded out words and figured out what the words were. Now he just needs to learn what all the letters say, and he’s good to go! (He currently knows quite a few upper case letters, and about six of the lower case ones.)
Compared to Anna, Bjarki’s always shown a remarkably low interest in letters. I remember Anna going through 2-3 ‘high-interest phases’ in letters from about 3 or 4 years old so she knew most of them by five years old. The ‘reading’ part was too involved for her though until she entered kindergarten at 5 and a half where she really got down to business and learnt to read.
Bjarki has really only now shown any interest at all in reading on his own, and it’s interesting to me that he’s gotten the mechanics down before he’s learnt all the letters.
