The Chauffeur
Today I played the part of family chauffeur. We (only) have one car (still), so if I need to be out and about, I need to confiscate the car in the morning when Finnur goes to work. Due to scheduling issues, he planned the day so that he would arrive later than usual, but would be staying late and getting a ride home with some friends. So that saved me one ride.
Apparently the Universe decided that was untenable so here’s my drive-full day:
Bjarki to daycare, Finnur to work. Drop by the fishmongers on the way back home to get fresh fish, notice the windshield fluid is low (very bad this time of year), go to gas station to fill up. Station happens to be next to a grocery store so I stock up on necessities. I make it home shortly before lunch, have a snack, and head out again, to try a lunch-time pregnancy yoga class (not bad, will probably go again).
When yoga class is over, I find missed calls on the phone – turns out Anna’s decided her friends are more fun than piano class, and she’s not gone. I drive to pick her up and drop her off at music school 20 minutes late, but with 30 mins remaining of the class – so it’s not a total loss. (She got instructions that next time I don’t pick up the phone it means ‘no, you can’t skip class’, and not ‘yes, do whatever you want’).
After the unexpected piano-detour (thankfully not long at all, these are all within walking distance from our home) I just make it to today’s midwife-appointment. Still no protein in the urine, but blood pressure is acting up still (the piano-class incident not helping) so my GP ups the dosage from one to three pills per day. Apparently these things just work for a set amount of time per day and then dissipate.
From midwife I go home, eat a late lunch, before lounging on the couch for a bit, and gasp, watch a 43 minute tv episode. Then out again, this time to pick Anna up to drop her off at the swimming pool for swim practice. Go home, and try moderately successfully to nap for half an hour. Then out again, this time to pick Bjarki up from daycare.
Knowing Finnur was going to be a no-show at home until late, me and Bjarki also go swimming until shortly before 18 (6 pm).
The last drive of the day was the drive from the swimming pool to home, but that’s four departures from home-base in one day, and a lot of stops. I think I’ll be going to bed early tonight, and avoiding any driving tomorrow!!
