Anna’s First Swim-Meet
We signed Anna up for swim practice this fall. She hasn’t been all too thrilled about it, but she’s nonetheless managed to get herself to the pool three times a week, after school, most weeks so far. So far most practices have been ok-to-fun, so that’s been encouraging. And just to recap: Before this she attended a swim school in the US for two years, between the ages of 3-5. At the end of that run she was very comfortable in the water, and didn’t need any outside assistance while swimming.
All this is a lead up to the fact that today was Anna’s first swim meet. The sports club (Breiðablik) called an ‘internal’ swim meet, that is the kids from the lowest three ranks (C, D and E) were to compete against each other. So this morning we went to the other swimming pool in our town, which has a luxurious 25m indoor pool (as well as a 50 m outdoor pool, hot tubs, big water slide, and a smaller inside pool.

Waiting for her turn. She was to compete in two events: 25m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. Since this was swimming, there were some 22 events planned, but thankfully there weren't that many competitors, or long distances, so it went pretty quickly.
Anna in lane 5 (bottom of the image) for her first ever 'competition': 25m breaststroke. She told me afterwards she'd gotten confused with the hand-movements, but she still managed to come in 4th out of five, so she was pretty happy about that. Her time was 50.88 seconds.
She got a pretty late start for her second event: 50 m freestyle. I don't think they've spent a whole lot of time practicing jumping into the pool, so there's definitely some room for improvement. 🙂

After the meet was over, Finnur came to pick us up. The remainder of the day was spent shop-hopping while Finnur watched a soccer game. We then headed home to receive some good friends. 🙂
