Here we go again…
Teaching begins tomorrow morning at 08:20. I’m much less stressed than I was last year, which I find slightly remarkably since I’ve hardly done any prep besides fishing out my old slides and reviewing the book index. Yes, I do have stuff to talk about tomorrow morning, and hopefully it’ll all turn out ok.
This quarter I’m apparently teaching two courses, the intro to communications (same as last fall) , and then a new ‘wireless communications’ course which is meant for masters-level students. This course will be new and may only have 4 students, so ‘lecturing’ won’t really work. It’ll be interesting what it turns out to be.
Today we welcomed the new incoming students. I counted 25 first year students total, and of them there were two females. Ugh. That’s sooo bad. It means things haven’t changed one bit since I was an undergrad some 15-ish years ago. Oh, how to change?! How to change?!?!
Other than that, the two kids seem to be settling in quite well in their new schools. Anna is in a class with 15 students (the other two classes have 18 and 19 students, but don’t change for legacy reasons). Bjarki started at a new daycare a week and a half ago, in the same class as a boy across the road, right next to Anna’s school. He seems to be adjusting pretty well, at least we’ve heard no troublesome stories.
Life in our new place is going well, although we still have some way to go to find a place for everything and make it look neat and tidy. We also have not hung a single picture yet, which will start grating on my nerves soon. I do feel like it’s time to move on from Ikea prints, but I’m not sure where to.
Anna is madame social these days, and we rarely catch her alone. Last night we were interrupted by the doorbell ringing at least three times, with kids asking if Anna could come out to play.
The evenings are finally getting dark now (it’s 9:40 pm and the sky is sunset-orange) but earlier in the month she’d sometimes stay out until 10pm with the neighborhood kids. By Icelandic law, young kids have to be home by 10pm in the summer, but it’s 8pm in wintertime (starting 1 September).
