Baby Steps
Bjarki was up at 06:22 this morning, much to my chagrin. Yes, it’s very bright outside by that time now, so there was zero chance of convincing him to go back to bed. Instead, I fed him breakfast, fetched my duvet and fell asleep on the sofa while he played. This is a routine that Finnur has perfected, and I try not to mess with perfection.
At 8 am my penicillin-alarm went off, and it was time to face the day. Some mucking-about later, I finally managed to deliver Bjarki to daycare around 09:30. On my way back I stopped by the house of my fellow Electromagnetics instructor, who handed over 27 finals for me to finish grading (I have two problems out of six). I came home, plonked the finals on our dining room table, crawled onto the sofa, and slept for three hours.
I guess I was lower on energy than I thought. Hmmm…
After I regained consciousness, it was late-lunch-time, answer-email-time, and then I finally manged to drag myself over to the pile of finals. I went through them one by one and flipped each booklet to open to my first problem, while surveying the answers briefly. This exercise drained my mental batteries completely, and that was as far as I got today. Tomorrow I will randomize the exam-booklets, and attack the first problem. If I’m feeling feisty I’ll attack the second one too. We’ll see.
After I was done surveying the finals, it was time to pick up Bjarki. He had been sad that he wasn’t staying with his grandparents yesterday (my service level is obviously inferior) so I’d arranged with Finnur’s mom that we could come over after daycare and she’d kindly invited us to stay for dinner. So that’s where we went and spent the remainder of the afternoon.
Bjarki was not happy that he had to go home, and go to bed, so I let him play for a bit once we got home. That seemed to make him happy, and he agreed shortly thereafter that it was time for bed. Right when I was about to put him in bed though, he insisted on calling Anna on the computer. When Anna turned out to be unavailable, we called Finnur’s cell phone (free, through the laptop!) and they exchanged ‘good nights’. Awwwww.
Here are a couple of pictures of Bjarki after we’d just returned home, and he got to play for a bit. (Taken at 7:30 pm, with full blaring daylight outside.)
