Waiting for the numbers to come down
First off: Massive congratulations to Guðrún and Snorri on the birth of their third child this past night! All went well, and they were home by lunchtime!
Now, back to our saga of ill health. Around 2am Bjarki had been coughing a dry cough for close to an hour, and I found myself in our basement-storage, hunting down the humidifier we brought from the US. That did seem to soothe the coughing a bit, and we all managed to sleep until 7am.
I found myself in significantly better health this morning than yesterday, although I was still a bit woozy and low on energy. Having very little energy to deal with the kids, I finally hooked up our DVD player to the ‘tv’ (little used computer monitor). Yes, it only took us half a year to do that, that’s been the power of YouTube! (And now that I’m typing this, I begin wondering whether our Wii can’t play DVDs also…? )
Bjarki kept on coughing, while Anna seemed on the mend a bit, while Finnur continued being miserable. Being a rather over-concerned-over-my-poor-little-boy-and-his-preemie-lungs-mother I called up the urgent-care center (Læknavaktin) and the nurse-on-call told me to bring him in for a listen.
So I loaded the kids into the car around lunchtime (to give Finnur a break), dropped Anna off at her grandparents, and headed to the urgent care center. There I ran into a good friend, who’d just brought in her boy and gotten a ‘pre-or-beginning-stage pneumonia’ diagnosis for her boy. Ugh! So Bjarki and I waited for half an hour before it was our (free) turn.
As usual, Bjarki was a doctor’s dream and let the doctor have a good listen. The doctor proclaimed him to have clear lungs, and noted that both ears still had tubes. So we headed out with instructions to ‘sidetrack’ Bjarki by having him drink or eat for when he started coughing again.
We stopped by Finnur’s parents’ place again for a quick bite to eat, but by then Bjarki was so tired that I decided to have him nap there, and he slept for 3.5 hours!! At some point Anna climbed into bed also, and I found myself being the diagonal on a rather small bed between two very warm children. Oh dear…
Dinner was another low-key affair: hot-dogs in a bun, although I was lucky and dove into some ‘traditional Icelandic food’ that my grandma had brought from a party we missed last night (boohoo!). Bjarki was still tired (getting sick again?!) and wanted most of all to sleep more. Anna on the other hand seemd to be perking up, while Finnur was a little bit better, but still quite poorly.
And so, we enter a new week, still sick, but hopefully the numbers on the thermometer will come down soon.
