Fall is in the air
After a week of glorious weather (who needs a fleece jacket? not me!!), yesterday was more in the family of “window weather”. It looked nice but a cold gusty wind blew where it could, and the cold wind continued on today. We did manage to walk downtown yesterday to enjoy the annual “Culture Day” for a bit. Unfortunately we set out late, had many diversions on the way there, and so only visited one museum before heading back for dinner – which then was later than late because Finnur ran into mountains of trouble (closed stores, traffic, closed roads due to Culture Day, etc. etc…) trying to acquire gas for our BBQ. But it all worked out in the end.
We continue to make slow progress on the apartment. Most notably we went to Ikea this past week and procured a coffee table (LACK!) and shelves (BILLY!) because, believe it or not, we were actually short on furniture. Yup, we sold most of our living room stuff shortly before the movers arrived, but never manged to replace it. Anyway, as a result, we can now put our feet up on a table, and we’ve emptied out a good chunk of book boxes to fill our shelves. Yes, we found (to my horror) that we’d left quite a few books here some 10 years ago. I’m afraid there’ll have to be a culling…
Today I went to Ikea again to procure more shelves, this time for the office/playroom, which is still in terrible shape. We didn’t manage to put them together though, because Adda and Halli stopped by with their kids this afternoon, bringing lovely bakery goodies and flowers. The kids managed to turn Anna’s already rather messy room into an utter disaster, which was good because while I can live with a ‘rather messy’ room, a ‘disaster’ is right out of the picture. After our visitors had left, we thus finally, finally deboxed the last boxes in her room, and put everything into shelves and Anna even sorted out a boxful of dolls that will be going into storage. I won’t say the room is spotless, but it’s 80-90% there. Btw, anybody need some fluffy toys?!
This coming week I start teaching (Thursday), and that will be interesting if nothing else. Anna starts school tomorrow (well, she gets her timetable tomorrow, school starts for real on Tuesday), but as of right now she’s been waitlisted for after-school care because they haven’t been able to fully staff the (YMCA-ish) after-care place that’s right next to the school. The manager sounded optimistic on Friday that they’d at least be able to offer her a spot some days out of the week shortly. He was hoping to be fully staffed one or two weeks after school starts.
And that’s about it on the interesting front. The week passed quickly, and I fear that I’ll blink and it will be December already.
