Snæfellsnes
Late Tuesday night we decided to tag along the next day with Adda and Halli to Snæfellsnes, a peninsula north of the capital area. Finnur’s parents happen to have a small house in one of the towns there, Ólafsvík, which turned out to be available for a couple of nights. We drove there on Wednesday afternoon (total driving time about 2.5 hours, plus 30 minutes of stopping to shop) and were delighted to find that the weather was gorgeous. And no, we hadn’t checked the weather beforehand – that’s how un-Icelandic we’ve become.
We took it easy on Wednesday, but on Thursday we drove to a nearby town, Grundarfjörður, to go swimming in an outdoor pool (Ólafsvík’s swimming pool is indoors). For those ‘not in the know’ all outdoor pools in Iceland are heated, and every single one sports at least one hot tub (which is where you’ll find Finnur).
After swimming and eating a late lunch, we stopped by a sandy beach to let the kids play, while the adults wandered here and there.
The beach left the adults exhausted (all but Adda who took the kids to a nearby playground), but after some napping we made dinner and then spent a good two hours getting the kids down. Once they were out, we played a few rounds of Rummikub.
Friday morning was spent cleaning and packing up, before we headed to Stykkishólmur shortly after noon to visit yet another pool. After a good splash, and a gazillion trips down the fun windy-slide, we got some ice-cream, then said farewell to our traveling companions and headed back to the capital.
And yes, there are many more pictures to come, but it’s late and time for bed. Later!
