Arnar and Magnea
We finally made it to my uncle Arnar’s and Magnea’s today! We had to reschedule meeting them twice because of various illnesses, but today we took the plunge (even though I still have my ‘sexy voice’) and ate delicious lunch at their home. We got to meet little Lóa Bryndís for the first time, which was a treat, and Anna enjoyed playing with Eyþór, even going a little nuts when it came time to leave.
After a nap-break at home-base, we then headed to my aunt Hulda’s to have dinner. Also on the agenda was fixing the internet connection in the back house (where my brother, Nökkvi, lives) and for a while there we had Mr. Fix-It-All (Arnar), the Computer Scientist (Finnur), and the Electrical Engineer (Hrefna) all huddled together. Tellingly, my main contribution was fetching the vacuum cleaner and cleaning up the mess resulting from Finnur drilling a hole through a cabinet…
Dinner was great, and it’s interesting that now that we’ve been here for 3 weeks, the main dinner has shifted from lamb (or other meat) to fish. Is it possible that we’re approaching normalcy? Or maybe it’s cyclical? Afterwards, Finnur left to hang out with his siblings, while I stayed behind for a bit.
The weather today was just perfect. It rained like crazy for the first part of the day, and then dried up, even though the clouds stayed overhead. The result was a balmy afternoon, with that perfect “wet earth and growth” smell, my favorite smell ever – but only when it’s coldish outside, not hot and humid! We hung outside a lot at Hulda’s, with the kids playing cops and robbers, utilizing the new outside door lock on the small children’s house in the backyard to turn it into a proper prison. I’m not sure how long that lock’s going to stay there…
After dinner we offered Anna a chance to sleep overnight at Hulda’s house which she was thrilled to accept. This marks night number 5 of Anna not sleeping at home-base, a five-fold increase over pre-Iceland-trip-status. When we left, she was in the back house avidly watching her 10 year old cousin playing a computer game, while the 8 year old cousin played Naruto death-matches on the Playstation against my brothers. To say that Anna has stepped into an alternative universe, here in Iceland, is an understatment… 😉
