Bæbæ súrefni
[A momentous day… We’ve been given the official OK to discontinue the supplemental oxygen for Bjarki!! 🙂 A lady from Apria finally came yesterday with the equipment we needed to do an overnight O2 blood-saturation test. Annoyingly, the test was ordered on Nov 12th, and it should have happened a week later, i.e. on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Instead, the respiratory therapist (RT) at the Menlo Park Apria branch came by and declared he didn’t have the correct probe to hook up to the equipment, and so he couldn’t do the test.
I asked him if any other Apria branches in the Bay Area would have it, and he said no. So off he went and promised to be in touch. Well, a week later I called again to get a status on the probe, and the guy said “up to 2 weeks”. To try and press the matter I called Apria again a week later, and finally talked to the only person at that branch who seems to know what she is doing. She was appalled at how long we’d waited, and lo and behold, five minutes later a lady from the San Jose branch called to schedule the equipment drop-off the next day.
So we did the test last night, and today the Dr. called and told me that Bjarki’s sat-levels looked pretty good and that they generally stay in the high-90s when he sleeps. He therefore recommended that we discontinue the supplemental oxygen, but also warned me that Bjarki might go back on it if he gets a bad cold or gets sick and doesn’t seem to be able to get better in a reasonable amount of time.
In January we’ll go see the lung doctor again, and see how Bjarki’s doing. The big question is whether he can sustain weight gain off of the oxygen. The tricky trade-off is that if he has to spend too much energy keeping his blood saturation up (by breathing quickly for example), then he has less energy to devote to growing and getting bigger. His pediatrician wasn’t thrilled with his weigh-gain last time we saw her, so that remains an issue.
Other than that, not much to report, except that December is already here, much to my surprise. I wish I were further along with work, but Bjarki’s not been cooperating lately so not much has gotten done. Add to that a nasty head-cold and home-sickness and Hrefna’s not been the happiest of campers… 😉 But getting rid of the oxygen is huge, and now I feel much freer to leave the house than before.]
Hæhó-og-jibbíí-jei-og-jibbíííiii-jei… Bjarki má hætta á súrefninu!! 🙂 Læknirinn var að hringja og staðfesta að súrefnismagnið í blóð Bjarka án auka-súrefnis hafi verið ásættanlegt, og því megum við hætta að nota &#&”!#! nefrörið. Það tók annars tímana tvo að fá þetta blessaða næturpróf framkvæmt, því gæinn hjá súrefnisfyrirtækinu átti ekki réttan skynjara og þóttist ekki geta fengið það innan tveggja vikna.
Í gær náði ég hins vegar loksins í manneskju hjá súrefnisfyrirtækinu sem vissi hvað hún var að gera, og fimm mínútum síðar var búið að láta okkur vita að við fengjum græjuna daginn eftir. Í nótt sváfum við svo með lítið tæki í rúminu (á við tvo farsíma á stærð) og svo kom kona og náði í græjuna í morgun. Gögnin voru svo skoðuð í dag og læknirinn gaf okkur grænt ljós “fyrir lokun” ef svo má að orði komast… 🙂
Við vorum samt vöruð við því að ef Bjarki fær slæmt kvef eða verður veikur og á erfitt með að komast yfir veikindin, þá gæti hann þurft súrefnið aftur. Svo þarf að fylgjast með því að hann vaxi og þyngist eðlilega, því það er smá hætta á að hann eyði of mikilli orku í að halda súrefnismagninu uppi (andi t.d. of hratt).
