[Now that Bjarki’s more stable, we’ll be reducing the number of translated posts. Sorry about that, but we’re not entirely comfortable with the entire world reading about our lives, and prefer to limit the audience to the 300,000 that speak Icelandic. That said, here’s a little overview of how Bjarki’s doing, with reference to the list of problems he had at the hospital:
1) Chronic Lung Disease: He’s still using supplemental oxygen, but the lung doctor ordered an overnight blood-oxygen-saturation test yesterday, and if he passes that we can say goodbye to the oxygen. We still haven’t heard when the test will happen though.
2) Gastroesophageal reflux (GER): Still an issue. He has a lot of wet burps, although not all of them come all the way up to the mouth and out. He’s been off the anti-acid medication since he was discharged, but the lung doctor ordered him back on it yesterday to spare his pipes as he starts breathing just on his own (assuming he passes the night-test).
3) Apnea of prematurity (AOP): No longer an issue, Bjarki’s brain now remembers to breathe.
4) Anemia of prematurity: Not perfect, but improving. His blood-count numbers went up between his last two blood-draws (two weeks apart) which means he’s finally making his own blood at a fairly good rate. He’ll be tested again in two weeks.
5) Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT): No longer an issue. No tachycardia episodes were seen at the hospital after he came off his medication.
6) Osteopenia of prematurity: Still an issue. His numbers have gotten worse since leaving the hospital, so we have to do a better job of supplementing him with preemie-formula and vitamins.
7) Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): No longer an issue. He’s graduated from the biweekly check-ups, but will need a follow-up appointment in 4-6 months to see if he need glasses or is cross-eyed etc.]
