Spítalalíf
[I’ve spent the past four days (from noon until dinner) at the hospital with Bjarki, with a coffee break around 3pm. He’s now old enough to qualify for “fresh” breastmilk (previously it had to be frozen for at least 24 hours), so I’ve been arriving at the hospital and pumping. Then, right as he’s getting the “fresh from the dairy”-milk through the tube into his stomach, I’ve been putting him on the breast to encourage a link in his brain between food in his stomach and suckling. He usually gets in a few “suck-swallows” (not so good about the breathing still) before passing out with the “food stupids”.
I was looking through his folder earlier and on his progress report there are listed 7 “problems”: 1) Chronic Lung Disease, 2) Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), 3) Apnea of prematurity (AOP), 4) Anemia of prematurity, 5) Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), 6) Osteopenia of prematurity, 7) Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). In addition he also has a herniated belly-button. Every reflux episode causes him to “desat”, i.e. lose blood-oxygen saturation, and it takes him a while to “come up” again. He also “desats” when he’s trying hard to poop and when he stops breathing, although that’s fairly uncommon by now. He’s about 2.1 kg (4.6 lbs) and around 44 cm (17.3 inches). All in all he’s doing pretty well and even gave me a big smile as he succumbed to the “food stupids” at 6pm. 🙂
The gang had a good day. They started the day by playing a game of mini-golf, then ate sushi for a late lunch and ended by going to the swimming pool to cool off. Steinunn then made lasagne for us and now Finnur, Steinunn and Einar are playing Settlers of Catan (Knights and Cities).]
Steinunn bjó svo til lasagne í kvöldmat og nú eru þau Finnur, Steinunn and Einar að spila Settlers of Catan (Knights and Cities) á dönsku.
Annasamir dagar
[The last three days with our houseguests have been busy: On Thursday I took Einar, Steinunn and Anna to San Francisco to look at the Golden Gate, drive them down steep hills with Anna in the back seat laughing all the way down, visit Pier 39 (with Anna fascinated over the sealions) and then to the Exploratorium where we all completely lost track of time.
Yesterday we went to Santa Crusz Boardwalk, where we spent the day in the “rides” and then relaxed on the beach. Today Anna had her swimming lessons while Steinunn and Einar walked around University Avenue and Hrefna spent the day with Bjarki, like usual. After swimming we did some shopping at Fry’s and after Anna’s afternoon nap we all visited Bjarki at the hospital, where Steinunn and Einar saw him for the first time (as well as being Anna’s first time after her low grade illness). Einar then cooked delicious stuffed chicken breasts with Jalapeno sauce and later we played some Pinocle.
The comment of the day came from Anna at Fry’s today after we finished our sandwiches at Fry’s:
Anna: Daddy, do you have a lot of money on you?
Finnur: Huh, why?
Anna: Daddy, do you have a lot of money on you?
Finnur: I don’t know – Maybe, why?
Anna: Daddy, do you have a lot of money on you?
Finnur: Maybe, why do you ask? (this continued for a while until finally…)
Anna: Do you have a lot of money on you? (clearly not accepting anything but a yes reply)
Finnur: Yes, I have enough money on me – why?
Anna: My tummy is still hungry – it would like some icecream 🙂
At this point I recalled that at some point many weeks ago I had made up an excuse of not having enough money in my wallet to buy icecream. She clearly remembered and was not about to be fooled again! 🙂 ]
