Mjólkurdropar
[Bjarki started getting some milk again today, but only a tiiiiny bit. I think he’s getting 3 mL every 3 hours just to see how it goes but so far he’s been tolerating it ok. Today they also decided to put in a PICC line since he’s been blowing through about one IV per day. He only has two days left on antibiotics, but it might take him a week or more to get back up to full milk feeds, and until then he needs IV nutrition, so they figured a PICC line would spare him being poked any more. And since his nose is getting a bit sore from the nose-prong CPAP, they changed him to a CPAP system that uses a tiny mask that covers the nose.
The worst part about today was that I think I’m coming down with a sore throat so I won’t be able to visit him for a bit. That just kills me. (Actually, this whole “infection episode” had gotten me down more that I thought it would…) Finnur’s also been fighting something, and Anna’s had a mild cold for over two weeks, so the little guy will be “all alone” for a few days, but hopefully he won’t notice too much.
We were busy on the paper-work front today. I called the breast-milk bank to start the donation process. Apparently there are forms to fill out and a blood sample to give, but our freezer chest is almost full and I’ll either have to start dumping milk down the drain or giving it away. There are about 350 bottles of milk in there now, each containing up to 60 mL of milk. That’s a lot of milk. I must admit that I’ve been sad that Bjarki won’t be getting all of it, but I’ll just have to live with that.
We also went to the Social Security office to apply for something called “Supplemental Security Income” which Bjarki qualifies for since he was less then 1200 g when he was born. This entitles him to $263 per month while he’s in the hospital, and Medi-Cal coverage which we’re hoping will pay for some of the medical costs that aren’t covered by Finnur’s insurance. Thankfully I think that our maximum out-of-pocket is $3000, and there’s no “lifetime maximum”, so it shouldn’t be that bad. But I’m sure glad we have insurance because I talked to Bjarki’s case manager the other day and she told me that his bill is now at $700,000 and rising fast!
Now for Anna-news. She’s developing fast these days, talks non-stop and has entered the “funny” stage. She likes to make up words now and babble nonsense (funny!) and she’s trying to come to terms with time and sequences of events. The teachers say that she climbs everywhere and that she likes to play with a lot of different kids. They also note how cheerful she is, even when she’s being naughty! She seems to like sleeping in her room now, and so far she hasn’t figured out that she can still climb back into our bed. Instead she’s called for Finnur to come over a couple of times at 6am, which we think is a better solution in the long run then her coming over to us.]
