Smá hvíld
[Bjarki got tired of breathing so much on his own last night, and around 3 am they put him back on the CPAP. I’d actually called the NICU before going to bed and the first thing the poor nurse, that had just taken him on a couple of hours earlier, said was “I don’t think he likes me!” Apparently he started having a lot of “Bradys” and “de-sats” (both bad) around midnight, so I went to bed thinking he’d end up on a ventilator. But alas, the docs decided a ventilator was a little too extreme (i.e. he wasn’t that sick), so back to CPAP it was.
I went to see him at lunchtime today, and as I walked in, they were just putting the finishing touches on a second IV to give him some blood. Now, seeing my little boy with IVs in both hands kinda pushed me over the edge and I spent the rest of the day rather depressed on his behalf. Maybe it was just because I was a little low on sleep and food, but it didn’t help that my IV-experience in the hospital probably scarred me for life.
So before I forget: A few things to know if you have crappy veins. 1) The correct way to tell hospital people that you’ve got crappy veins is to say you’re a “hard stick”. 2) Where I was, the anesthesiologists were the best ones at putting in IVs. 3) If you’re not at risk of needing blood (i.e. you’re just getting medicine or fluids), you don’t need the regular sized IV needles (the green ones) and you can request the kid-sized needles (blue!). Your life will be so much more comfortable! 4) Request that they run the medicine in slowly, it’ll extend the life of your IV.
So anyway, back to Bjarki. He’s mostly been resting today and this evening they took out the first IV since it had started “leaking” (charming). He’ll stay on antibiotics for a week, and off of food for most of the week. The doctor was impressed though that he’d hung on to the nasal cannula for 24 hours while being “sick” and hoped that means he’ll manage a longer cannula stretch in a few days after he’s rested a bit and hopefully gotten over his infection.
Meanwhile, Finnur took Anna to a birthday party this morning and then had a quiet afternoon as she and I snoozed. We gave him a few small birthday presents (Anna was so excited!) before going out to dinner. Finnur then put Anna to bed before going to see Bjarki who apparently just slept. Good for him! Anna wasn’t too keen on falling asleep in her “new” room, but finally dozed off after Finnur came home and stayed with her for a bit. And that’s about it for now. Good night!]
[Today is Finnur’s 33rd birthday! Happy birthday beloved husband!! 🙂]
Finnur er þrjátíu-og-þriggja ára í dag! Til hamingju með daginn ástkæri eiginmaður!! 🙂
